I see this aspect ratio on the Night To Remember DVD.Whats is it?Is it an odd aspect ratio?Is it Anamorphic on this DVD?Thanks J.H.

1.66:1 means the horizontal is 1.66 times as long as the vertical.


It is a fairly common aspect ratio. Most Disney animated movies for example are made in 1.66:1 aspect ratio.


It can be anamorphic.

As far as DVDs go, anamorphic means that the encoded image is 1.78:1 or 16:9. For 1.85:1 films that requires a small black bar to be added to the top and bottom of the image, for 1.66:1 films it requires a small black bar to be added to the sides of the image. Not sure if the particular DVD you are asking about is anamorphic though. Sorry.

This was also the aspect ratio used as the European wide screen at one time. The first three James Bond Films were 1.66:1 as was the Hitchcock film Frenzy for example.

It shouldn't although most disney DVDs that are 1.66:1 anamorphic crop it the same as what would be done in most US theaters and recompose to 1.85:1

1.66:1 is the same as 15:9. While European widescreen sets are 16:9, due to overscan most proper 15:9 titles will look just like normal 16:9 titles - the black bars get eaten by the overscan border.
