Ok, 3.0's out and pretty darned solid. myreplaytv is imminent. What's next? I'd presume a new hardware device would be released or announced at CES in early January. Any guesses?

Will we see:

80hr Replay 3080?

ReplayTv Server 4100 (100GB) with $199.00 clients running over ethernet? (my dream Replay)

Replay 3060 with ethernet connection?

Replay 4060 with two tuners?

Any other Guesses/wishes?

Actually, someone could design a universal remote that was voice activated. I believe that Intel was working on something like this. As for Replay's future, I hope that it is sooner rather than later. And I hope it includes the following:

-digital bit stream recording from satellite and digital cable

-two digital recorders for watching one while recording another

-DD, PCM, and DTS support

-HDTV support

-Ethernet

-HD expansions

-video server capable

-DVD drive

-DVD-RW for archiving

Cheers

I've actually seen a "voice-command" remote. I can't find it now on the web, so don't know if it was a real product or a demo. It required you press a button on the remote, speak your command into a microphone on the remote, then release the button. Personally, I'd rather just press a button on a remote... it sounds a lot easier (plus would look a bit less geeky). http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

I believe the path will be somewhere about this order:

1) my.replaytv.com will debut, and the power to program your Replay over the internet will be very cool.

2) The MyReplay site will allow you to specify additional content which you would like to receive during the evenings. Your Replay will then record this content much in the same way that the "ReplayPresents" and "TiVo Takes" are recorded.

3) Dual-tuner/encoding path will be introduced

4) Replay will add a "browser" interface, which will allow you to browse web-like content pre-loaded during the nightly connection.

5) Replay will add more "WebTV"-like features.

6) A broadband connection will surface

7) Microsoft's "UltimateTV" will ship.

Personally I think Replay's going in an interesting direction. It's my opinion that they're focusing on the more "techie" audience...MyReplayTV.com and supposed-Palm things in the works indicate that.

But...does this jive w/ their advertising model? Ie: are techies the audience that advertisers want? Are they an audience that are responsive to advertising?

I think they're trying to position themselves as the "higher end" model to capture that portion of the market. I don't see Replay focusing on mom and pop in middle America like TiVo.

Is it a good strategy? Will it work? Is it even what they're doing? Who knows...just my two cents...

(if I'm right it means we're in for some cool stuff down the road maybe!)

I'd love to see some real new hardware announcements. The 3060 was so-so, but DirecTivo with it's digital audio support is screaming my name.

Cheers

I can see myself wanting the ability to record HDTV in the future. I have gotten to the point where I get home when I want to, sit down in front of the TV when I want to and watch what I want to. There have been a couple of instances recently where I had to race home to catch a HDTV showing on TV.

The ReplayTV has freed me from the tyranny of network programming but HDTV is pulling me back.
