With all of the different options on a single DVD Title, how does one know which one is the best for picture and sound quality?

Superbit

DTS

Directors Cut

Special Edition

Collectors Edition

SE?

Ultimate Edition

What do these labels tell me?

Superbit used to mean something now quality varies from disc to disc just like all the aothers, my advice find reviews of individual discs as far as picture/sound quality and use that for making purchase decisions.

All of the labels above are really nothing more than marketing. The exception is the DTS label. DTS is a surround sound format that many enthusiasts find superior to the "standard" Dolby Digital sound track. Even this can vary from disc to disc though. Again your best bet is finding a review for an individual disc release.
