Is it best to to turn the Sub level on my Onkyo THX receiver to max and then adjust the gain on my sub??

Actually it's best if you can keep the sub output signal between -5 to 0 just to make sure your sending an overly boosted signal that may be distorted and compromising sound quality and then set your GAIN.
