What's the difference between these two types of TVs? Is there consensus on pros & cons between the two?

Tends to have a better picture

Tends to reduce glare

Tends to have better picutre for side viewing

Last Longer

Cheaper

etc...

Shows you how much I know, I didn't realize they didn't have flat screens. Does flat panel only mean plasma or LCD?
yes, flat panel means plasma or lcd. CRT and rear projection are vastly different, are you seriously asking this question? Or are you asking about a more specific aspect of this.

CRT means cathode ray tube, which is what TV's have been for a long time. You can tell because the front is glass, and not perfectly flat. Rear projection is basically just a projector, inside a box. They are about as different as a car and a helicopter.

crt is the cheapest, can be viewed from any angle, and (i'm assuming, becuase there's ancient tv's around still) lasts longer than the others. But they can't get as big. I'm not sure if tube sets can display the high hd resolutions, my guess is that they cannot.

Thanks. I think that answers my question. So nowadays if you want a TV 50" + you either look at plasma, LCD, or rear projecction, right? My next question is what are the pros and cons of rear projection and I'll post that in the "rear projection forum."
While many people think of "flat panel display" to mean plasma and LCD because those are the two technologies that manufacturers have been able to make thin and sell commercially in significant amounts over the past 10 years, there's little reason to believe that that term cannot encompass a wide variety of other display technologies, including OLED and even DLP (which have recently gotten dangerously close to plasma and LCD in slimness), along with some other promising technologies that have never been sold commercially such as SED.

And the only benefit I can think of with CRT based RPTV is that its inexpensive. I don't think I've ever seen one with anything approaching satisfactory PQ. I understand that with proper calibration these units can yield good PQ but for what you pay for a professional calibration you may as well go with a newer technology.
There are CRT RPTVs (using 3 CRTs for red, green, blue), and direct-view CRTs, using a single tube with separate red, green, blue guns and phosphors that glow with these colors. -- John

That was just an FYI for the OP.

Your guess would be wrong. A direct view CRT HDTV has the potential to offer a better image than either a Plasma or LVD set.

As previously pointed out, screen size is limited and the set is generally massive... although some improvement in weight and size came to be a couple of years ago.

It's getting hard to even find a new CRT set anymore.
Too bad about the direct-view CRT's. Maybe SED isn't to far away.
