Whats the difference between the 34HF85 and 34HFX85?

442 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  fburch
I have a 36.5" wide hole to fill upstairs (Wife's TV). Im replacing a 32" Sony Wega. Source material is HD Cable and DVDs when they dont want to watch whats on the big system downstairs. The Toshiba's are the only 34" tube that will fit in the cabinet. Are these things any good? I really dont want to spend the money on a 37" Sharp flat panel and I wont be watching this thing anyway. Whats the difference between HF and HFX?

Please Advise and Thanks In Advance!

neither is really recommended tube

they have both problems

do a search and you will they have trouble with displaying 1080i over component

"weird flicker"

teh HFX use to be a black bezel with dual HDMI inputs but this years only has one HDMI input

not sure what else the differences are

I know Crutchfield has some of the best information/specs about these TVs

I was also making the same comparison, I am now looking for a HFX84 because of the reliability issues on the 85's but they aren't easy to find so I may end up risking it on an 85.

Looking at the detailed specs on Toshiba's website, there are a few feature difference a neophyte like myself has no understanding in the processors and the like but the biggest difference I see and also as described by both sales help in a few stores and Toshiba's Cust Service line is the audio, larger more powerfull speakers and a built in sub in the HFX. And of course the silver bezel on the HF and black on the HFX.

Also to note: As of this morning, Toshiba's list price on the 34HFX85 dropped to 1099, lower than the 34HF85 at 1199. I'm stumped by that but I figure either the HFX will be back to the 1599 it was a couple of days ago or the HF price will drop another couple hundred.

I hesitated getting a refurb 34HFX84 and then couldn't find one available when I was ready to pull the trigger. I bought a 34HF85, got it ISF calibrated and was thrilled. My STB/DVR died, got a new Motorola model and got the 1080i banding/flicker (over HDMI only, not component). Changed STB to 720p and problem went away.

As it stands right now, no other problems, I love it, but I'm not thrilled that I had to shell out $$$ for ISF calibration to get a good picture, or change the cable box output to fix a common problem with 1080i HDMI input.

But I have no regrets getting the 34" Toshiba over a 30" Sony, the extra 4" make a big difference in our room and the Toshiba fills the cabinent perfectly.

Agree with mkreef's assessment and I also have a 34HF85. In addition to the banding problem on the HDMI input, I also see a white glow at the top of the screen using the component inputs. Both problems are associated with a 1080i signal and are overcome by feeding the set a 720p signal. I also had my set ISF calibrated and this made all the difference in the picture quality on my set.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.
