I have been trying to find out the real difference between the HD2+ and HD3 chips all day, and I cant seem to find a real answer. Does anyone have the answer? Please help.

HD3 is a 3rd Generation DMD chip. 1 mirror for 2 pixels on the screen.

It has a softer image than the HD2/HD2+ chip


HD2+ is a 4th Generation DMD chip. 1 mirror per pixel, with a sharper

image, better black level and better contrast


Contrast Ratios:

HD3 = 1500:1

HD2+ = 2500:1

There is much discussion on this topic. The HD3 wobulates to get the same amount of pixels with half the mirrors. To me, it's a softer picture. I prefer the HD2+.

xHD3 (1080p successor of HD3) will use wobulation technology. 'HD4' (1080p successor of 720p HD2+) will not.

To my knowledge, the x in the xHD3 indicates that it is a 1080p chip. And it sounded to me like the HD2+ was the last non-wobulated chip that TI was going to make.


I haven't heard that the HD4 will be a non-wobulated chip. If that is true, that is awesome.


Samsung calls the image from an HD3 "smooth." I call it "blurry." No me gusta.


So, fast350camaro, excatly how fast is your 350 Camaro?

The first is not speculation, it's fact.


The second is complete speculation as the naming of an HD4 chip in and of itself is speculation. The only place you can find the term 'HD4' in respects to DLP on any manufactures website is Zeiss (German Light Engine Manufactor) and it's unclear what it is. They have it listed under two light engines one of which is 720p and one is 1080p.


I'd speculate based on current numbering conventions that it would be a 1080p that was a straight forward 1:1 pixel mapping and not a wobbulated 0.5:1 -> 1:1 (horz) chip.


I've seen and heard all the reviews about how magnificent the xHD3 is, but I speculate that an unwobbulated chip will be able to produce an even more magnificent image.
