I "donated" my Sharp 32" D40U to the sitting room after my mom's 12 year Sony tube eventually became geriatric. I've been shopping around for awhile and lock down to Sony Z and Sammy 650. I missed the X'mas deal on the Z's and 650's demand is still high that keeps its price high, so I'm still in the market. Just find out the Sharp D85U is a bargain compared to the two. I remember Sharp used to be among the best before xbr4 came out, and in terms of value it beats every other brands. How come there's so little and limited info about the D85U on AVS? Perhaps I'm just dumb and please excuse me about that. Sammy and Sony talks are overwhelmingly taking over the LCD section here.


Anyway, any suggestion between the Sony Z, Sammy 650 and Sharp D85U if it's mainly for PS3 gaming and standard DVD/BD movie?

shraps 40 to 65inch suffer from banding. and thats why there so cheap, I personally think there still over priced, and the black's are know where near lcd's of today. toshiba is the best bargain nowadays. I would highly consider toshiba over every brand out.

Many of the Toshiba's actually use Sharp Glass as they have no glass producing facility whatsoever - they trade-off it's microprocessing specialty with Sharp and are in a Partnership with Sharp and so you need to get your facts straight before posting your broad brush against all Sharp panels and then in the next sentence brag on Toshiba which is using Sharp Glass in many of it's panels.


Not all Sharps suffer from banding BTW --- that is indicative of K2 plant as where it originated and never a banding report from the K1 plant. I agree the D85 is inferior to the mentioned Samsung/Sony and of course they are not truly meant to compete with them - the SE94 and it's soon to be announced replacement at CES will compete against those.


BTW both Toshiba and Sony are partnered with Sharp in it's new Plant which should start producing panels in the next 60 days and you'll see even more Sharp Glass on both rebadgers and BTW Sharp also provides panels to half a dozen other rebadgers without any reports of banding - >25% of their production gets rebadged by others.

Question is can you tell by looking at model # or somethning else?

Receiving a sharp today and a little concerned. Every lcd I looked at under $2000 in the 52 inch range had one issue or another with someone's review or post. this is a very stressful process.


if tv has banding, how does sharp address this issue? and being that I'm new to the lcd world, is it difficult to find?

Even without the banding, when I was checking in the shops, the Sharps looked to have both greyish looking blacks and very sloppy off angle performance. Of the big names they would be my last choice these days.

Well, I cancelled my order delivery for the sharp. looking for recommendations- 46 inch to 52 inch in the $1700 range. this will go in a room that is bright. so I 'm worried about glare.

I agree that LCD's and plasmas now are a stressful proposition.


I would recommend going to a store and seeing which design suits you before price shopping on Amazon or going with a forum sponsor. I would agree that the Toshiba are well respected, as are panasonic LCD's if you aer willing to stay with 37inches. 37inches is the biggest you can go before your tv becomes ugly btw, and big enough for 99% of your viewing, as well as a great computer monitor.


Sammy 650 are well rated and good sellers.


Sony is overpriced unless you find it on sale- I am going with the 40inch xbr6 I found on sale but am not sure I will like it when it arrives

I recommend a toshiba 545 google it if you need to know more about it. @westa, even though sharp makes glass, banding is only on there tv's last I heard, and I like sharp dont get me wrong but there not the best around nowadays.

I'm a little concern of input lag on 120Hz TV when playing games on PS3 although it seems to be fixable. Toshiba and Philips are some cheaper choices, but after I compare them to Samsung 650 or up I think I'm leaning towards to the higher tier product. So Sharp is no longer in the top league? Hmm, I also think that Sony is overpriced but it looks like it dosen't lag as much as Samsung does for gaming using HDMI. I've not been able to compare the Samsung/Sony to the Sharp because somehow they were put side by side in either local CC or BB. If looking only at the D85U it doesn't look that bad or probably I just don't have the videophilic sense. However the 650 has really good PQ.

The 650 is a nice HDTV, but I personally dont like the grain in the picture when viewed up close. And my honest opinion, toshiba is the way to go. They have a game mode that corrects input lag, no other large screen has this and even though toshiba, says there lcd's are 8ms refresh rate studies show they are closer to 4ms.


And with SRT technology there picture on SD, programs are the best of any lcd, including samsung and sony. I like sony alot but there over priced samsung's are nice to but I think there over priced as well. Toshiba offers there TV's for hundreds less and if you look into there TV's you will see there just as powerful as sony and samsung, and in many ways there TV's are superior in processor power 14bit mostly, add in deep black's, vibrant colors. Toshiba is the best priced high quality lcd maker period.

Either the Sammy 650 or the Sony Z would be a terrific choice.

And I disagree with the poster who said that 37 inches is the max size you can go before your TV becomes 'ugly'. That's more a matter of scaling and decor anyway, i.e. a big TV dominating a small and/or bare room. But what if it's a big room?


In fact, you have to go to at least 40" in several top makers line-ups, if you want their 'top features' (such as 120 Hz). It's just the way they structure it, though I think the smaller sets should get more love than they presently do.

i see that your new and you now little,not all sharp tv's have the banding problem.And not all banding is the same.Some go from very light to heavy.Also,you must have just bought a toshiba,as it seems like your pushing that brand among others.

The Toshiba 545 seems to be feature-packed, but I still haven't seen a real one in store. It's difficult to find which one 120hz TV does better gaming via HDMI. So far Sony is the best bet based on what I've read on AVS. My PS3 is dusted for over a month already, and I bought 2 new games for a new TV.... Please help.

The 545 definitely caught my attention. Now it takes the place of z4100 on my list. However I still haven't seen a real 545 in person, and the price is still high due to the fact that it's still new. The 46D85U is dropping in the $12xx range again on amazon. while both 46a650 and 46sv545 are still in $14xx range. I want to make the decision before superbowl, but I don't know when the 545 will become available in local CC or BB. Why can't I be rich enough to go straight up to xbr8?

I just wanted to address some of the above posts. The 46 - 52" toshiba 545u and most other 46 - 52" toshibas use a samsung panel not a sharp. I have read 42 and under use lg or sharp. This will change in 2009 when toshiba starts buying some of their 32" and above panels from sharp. The new sharp manufacturing facility will supposedly be state of the art and be the most advanced lcd production center in the world. Sharp will only be supplying about half the panels toshiba will need the rest they will still buy from others.

It was my understanding that toshiba had ownership along with hitachi and panasonic in ips-alpha. Dont they use their own glass they manufacture or do they no longer have any ownership in ips alpha?

sharp is still my favortie lcd maker...and it seems they really pulled there act together with the 85u...its a great tv for less then the competitors
