Does anyone have any info or rumors on when 1080p plasmas are expected to hit the market? I'm talking full 1920x1080 progressive scan in a 50" plasma wall mountable monitor with no media box :).

The highest scan-line out today seems to be the Sony Wega at a weird 1024x1024 resolution.

I'm holding off on a plasma while I wait for an HDMI switching receiver, but I expect those to be out early 2005, perhaps at CES... no such luck on a 1080p plasma I suppose... :)

But are we talking 2005, 2006, 2007, etc?

Seems kind of boring for companies to keep coming out with 1024x768 models after 7 generations.

You seem to be talking about 42" resolutions, but want a 50" model. The 50" HD plasmas are 1366x768 currently. There are supposed to be some new 70" plasmas coming out soon with 1920x1080. They don't have the capability yet for smaller pixels to do that on a smaller plasma though - I would guess at least 3 years or more.

Samsung showed a 1080p panel last fall and said that it would be available this year. Do a google and see if any 1080p displays are available. The samsung model# was PS70X4H.

With a suggested retail price of $49,999.95 I guess it will be awhile before I can afford to buy a Samsung PS70X4H Plasma display that supports 1920x1080.

For the time being... I've got about $5000 I can allocate towards the purchase of a 1366x768 PDP, which eventually (maybe 5 years down the road) will get moved to a bedroom/office to make way for the next BIG thing.

Man... what a tough life I have!!!

The highly anticipated new SED technology announced by Toshiba may be the first affordable 1080P display. Supposedly it will be out sometime next year - prices to be determined.

The Sony 1024x1024 is a 42", but most 42" plasmas are 1024 x 768. I meant that the Sony has the highest vertical resolution out there. I don't have room (or money) for a 70" plasma :(. I have a feeling the 70" monitor will look like crap at 1920x1080. Just not enough pixels there. The dots will be huge.

Actually when the 1024x1024 Alis panel has done all it's scaling to fit the image to the screen, the resulting resolution is far less then 1024 for the vertical.

anyway...

There are some Receivers out now that have HDMI.

There is a great new Onkyo Reciever. It has a removable/upgradeable "blade" for future proofing. It comes with 2 HDMI's.

Not sure of the model number off hand.

Sledgehammer, I don't think a 70" 1920x1080 would have huge pixels. Here's some math (feel free to correct if I've messed up):

50 inch plasma = 2179 inches sq. with 1049088 pixels (1366x768)

Equals pixel density of 481.5 pixels / inch

70 inch plasma = 4270.7 inches sq with 2073600 pixels (1920x1080)

Equals pixel density of 485.5 pixels / inch.

Looks like the 70" comes out slightly ahead, but they're very close.

The dots will be about the same as in 50" HD.

1366x768= about 1 million pixels. 1920x1080= about 2 million pixels.

A 70" screen will have about twice the area of a 50". So basic math shows that the pixel size will be the same.

No one has announced or even hinted at anything under 70" with 1080p in a plasma. Re SED, the largest thing that has been shown is in the 30+ inch range. Best guesses is 2006 for larger SED panels but that's really just speculation.

FWIW, the reports from CEDIA indicated that the LG 71" 1080p plasma looked excellent.

Cheers

There are a few high $$ receivers currently with HDMI switching. How soon do products ship after being announced at CES? Maybe I have the wrong impression, but thought many products shown in January don't ship until 3rd qtr. Specifically I am looking for the next generation of sub $1000 receivers to have HDMI. Also the next generation of DVD changes to have HDMI. Currently no DVD changers have HDMI, only single disc units.

If you find the model number, let us know. I suspect it is well out of my sub $1000 receiver price range. Denon's flagship 5805 will have HDMI switching - but at over double the cost of a 42" ED plasma (ouch).

Well, somehow people manage to use 1280 x 720 projectors with 120-inch screens and I rarely here them say: Boy, this looks like crap.

audiosound dot com appears to sell the 70" samsung pdp for $36,500 and the 80" one for $45,000. not sure if they actually sell those, but they are listed on their site as if they do with a note that says "call to order".

i bought a brand new 330ci in 2000 for about $39,000... yikes.

jcpzero...

I will get that model # for you. I didn't find it on the Onkyo website or in their press releases. There is a Full Page ad about it in the newest Sound & Vision magazine.

I'll check it out tonight.

I have a feeling that it will cost mucho $$$$$.

Not really. If you calculate it the size of the pixel size and dotpitch for the 70" 1920x1080 panel will be the same as that for a current 50" 1366x768 HD plasma, which in turn is slightly smaller pixel size that the 42" 1024x768 plasmas. This shows that this must be the current limit of plasma dotpitch - the 70" plasma doesn't have any new technology in that area its just bigger with the same pixels as a 50" display.

What about a 50" with 1920 x 1080? That should be the "ultimate" plasma. I wonder if they will ever have it... 50" plasmas today are 720p, not 1080p. Thats a big difference.

Usually 3 to 4 months, same as CEDIA. Products announced there are shipping November and December, and January.
