When can we expect DarkChip3 with 3-chip dlp?

887 Views 9 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  mikesyxthsense
It has always been said that 3-chip dlp is hd2 only no hd2+. Since DarkChip3 models are one step up from what we have called hd2+ the transition from hd2 to DarkChip3 equipped chips should be noticable.

In your opinion what contrast ratio improvement can we expect from 3-chip dlp replacing hd2 with chips using the DarkChip3 process?

Is there any reason in the world not to put the latest chips in the 3-chip units?

Based on what I've heard they could put in chips that are HD2+, but also DarkChip3. If this is a running change to the chip line and not a new chip (I heard something about this being the case), then going to HD2+ could automatically put them at the latest.

I wouldn't expect a huge jump in CR just from the chip change, but if it is another generation of projector then I'm sure there will be some changes to the projectors themselves (otherwise the engineers are just popping in a new chip and not doing a whole lot). I would think that the amount of engineering to take a 3 chipper from HD2 to HD2+ would be a lot less than taking a single chipper from HD2 to HD2+ and adding a 7 or 8 segment wheel.

To sell current inventory?

Are people still buying 720p 3 chip units? :D
Yeah, they are called 2-4K LCD projectors. You may not have heard of them unless you frequent the Under $3500 USD MSRP Forum.

Hehe
I am trying again.

Have you heard anything about the latest chips going into the 3-chip dlp units?

The lackluster market for HD2x based 3DLP HT units selling for > $30K is history IMO. It turns out that the assumed CR advantage over the !080 LCOS units does not exist. The new 1400 x 1050 large venue models are comming out at that price point. If the HD2 3DLPs were repositioned in the $15 K to $20K range there still is not enough pq differentiation from the 1DLP models to warrent a market.
I think Runco is using those "Dark" chips in their 3-chip DLP pj's

I thought they were called Trygonian LCoSers.
I believe Sim2 HT500 is now shipped with HD2+ chip , I expect they will all end up going 1080. If any 3 chip companies are watching the Sony Qualia`s impact they will go one better, they have too. Also TI have to remain with the leaders.

Anybody who has worked in the Electronics manufacturing chain will know that the next generation chip is already tested and working. Its called marketing. As a manufacture we used to slug the chip to get 1x2x3x etc.

Until that is a company like Sony drops a house on your plans.

The finest word in the Oxford English is "demand"
