I've just noticed a minor issue. I seem to recall selecting something in the Replay guide and simply pressing "play" and it would resume from the point where I left off. Now, it seems to always "play from the beginning". (real bummer)

Did i miss the memo?

Select the show from the Replay Guide and hit select. Then the options to "play" or "play from beginning" will come up. I believe using the play button will always start it at the beginning.

I think 2.1 changed that? I allways use the pulldown now so I don't notice it.

Play from the menu = Play from where left off

Play from the remote = Play from the beginning.

Should be the opposite...

It hurts when you're using a Philips Pronto.. anyone ever find a Discreet code for "Play" from the menu, not from the button.

I'm trying to grasp what the problem is - sorry?

ReplayTV handles ALL menu functions from the remote - the only exception being, there's a Power On/Off button on the box itself.

I'm not deliberately trying to be clueless. I'm just trying to understand the question.

My experience:

- I select a newly recorded program.

- There is no "Play from beginning" option, just "Play." (This should be a clue to me that I've never seen this program before.)

- Once I've accessed it (even for a few seconds) the menu now offers two choices:

"Play" and

"Play from beginning."

From this point, if I select "Play," viewing resumes where I left off. Just as I would like it to do.

Just to clarify, Minnesotan, when they refer to "Play from the menu", they mean selecting "Play" from the drop down menu on the Replay Guide while a show is selected.

When they refer to "Play from the remote", they mean pressing the [Play] button on the remote while a show is selected in the Replay Guide. Doing this is a shortcut for pressing [Select] and choosing "Play from beginning".

They actually don't switch roles... You can use ENTER on any show, whether it's on now, the future or the past, and it will pop up the menu. SELECT simply changes what it does based on the item you have highlighted, which is consistant with the way the SELECT button works everywhere in ReplayTV.

Personally I think it would suck if pressing SELECT on a show that was on now popped up the menu. It would make what is currently a totally logical and simple operation (pressing select to tune to the show) into a complicated mess that would scare off novice users and inconvience me and a whole lot of other people most of the time.

Doug,

The existing behavior would be fine if the ENTER key worked to select a menu item as well. At least then folks with Prontos (like me) could just program the "select" button in the middle of our cursor controls to use the ENTER code and have it work consistently.

If it's really important to use SELECT to tune to a currently-showing program, it could be done easily by having "tune to channel" at the top of the popup and just doing a double click on SELECT. There could also be a timeout of say 1/2 second after which "tune to channel" would automatically occur after if the cursor wasn't moved.

But it's inconsistent the way it is. The flood of complaints over the past months should be proof enough that users don't like it the way it is.

I know it is a passionate debate, but the flood of complaints seem to stem from either the "I don't have enough buttons/room on my universal remote†or the academic “it is inconsistent and therefore needs to be changed†points of view.

The decision to make SELECT work the way it does was about simplicity over power. The decision to make ENTER work the way it does was to give advanced users a little more power by letting them expose the menu on shows that are now on. So I think the way it currently works is quite nice, because it works for both ends of the spectrum. And it is just as consistent as the color-coding in the channel guide is.

That being said, I still don’t understand the *problem*. From what I can tell, the problem isn’t that is inconsistent. And no one here seems to be confused by it. It seems like the problem is that it is a pain for universal remote control users, correct? Perhaps that is why ReplayTV hasn’t changed it yet, because they don’t understand the problem with the current implementation.

[please note, I don't work for ReplayTV anymore so debating it with me is purely for the fun of it! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif ]

Hey Doug,

The way the current SELECT button is programmed is designed for people who use their Replay unit basically as a cable box to view live TV, and for that purpose it is perfectly programmed, but for those of us that NEVER watch live TV, the only reason that we are going to "select" a show from the channel guide is to either record it, or to find all episodes, or something like that. You are correct that it is mainly universal users that experience this problem, I'm using the ENTER button on my 15-1994 as my Quick Skip button, so I don't have an ENTER button on my remote.

If you read my thread entitled " Select/Enter Switcheroo - here's my proposed fix " I think you'll agree that I have come up with a solution that should suit everybody.
