I have had my Infocus SP5700 for just over a month and I am still close to watching a movie a day (or evening) usually with my wife or any friend or relative I can coax to come over (they are all usually amazed at the quality of the image and of course its size).

On off days (I am a college instructor and have plenty of those) I sometimes watch even 2 movies (I saw Matrix 2 and 3 the other day).

Anyone with longer term ownership-at what time did you start to slack off in your movie watching? How long will I be "enslaved" by this movie habit (there are other things I need to do in my life).

Sorry, but I feel it'll never wear off. As long as Home Video producers keep advancing in telecine transfer technology, DVD's will continue to have crisper and clearer pictures, not to mention when HD-DVD hits the U.S. market. Your projector will become obsolete before the wonder of Home Theater wears out. JMHO. :)

I think it wears off when you go see a setup that blows your setup out of the water and you feel like you need to upgrade :). Damn you sony for making the Qualia look so good!

Summer. When you nerds actually come out of your caves and let some sunlight hit your face. Then you realize... Wow, reality is amazing! Its even better than HDTV!

Some men are satisfied with one woman their entire lives. Others are always wandering, even the night before their wedding. It's the same with projectors.

Tryg has been faithful so far, but he's a cheater at heart. It's just a matter of time. He'll drop that G1000 in a heartbeat as soon as he gets a better piece of PJ.

Are we talking about the novelty of that projector, this forum, or home theater in general? Hopefully not soon since I'm just getting started.

Yes, I'm as opportunistic as anyone. I'm like a monkey though. I'm not letting go of the last branch until another one is firmly in my grip.

I think he makes it very clear that he is referring to the novelty of movie watching and not the projector or this forum. With that in mind, rest assured your new found pastime is not endangered.

Well the problem is that just as the thrill wears down, whenever that will be, you will find something new that you want, and then the cycle starts all over.

I'm afraid, my friend, that once you enter the realm of front projection, there is no turning back.

Walter, I just guess I am not very experienced being in the company of someone that only watches movies on their projector. I mean, it seems strange. So, while the novelty may wear off for some, certainly the aspect of using things like their theater or media room for other activities might be different.

Also, I felt I needed to ask because if it was to be so heavily focused on 'the novelty of movie watching' why not the DVD forum where movies are discussed at length. Thus, I was thrown for a loop, but this does bring up a by-product question:

Would the poster's 'novelty' be renewed with new equipment that might present a better since of 'wow;?

It is not just movie watching but movie watching on the big screen at home. It is, at least in part, the continuing WOW factor. Just last night my wife and I watched Lord of the RIngs, Return of the King and thoroughly enjoyed it on our large 106" diagonal screen that provided the full movie experience in complete comfort. We could hold onto each other and even shed a tear or two without worrying what others might think if we were in a regular theater.

Of course there is fun in the shared pleasure of watching a great movie in a theater with hundres of others so we do occasionally go to the cinema.

In reference to the question of upgrading I am sure some time in the future this will be a consideration, especially when we get high definition DVD but for the present our current setup (Infocus 5700 with Outlaw 950/770 7.1 audio system) is more than enough.

I love the movie experience at home but find we watch less and less films. It is no less exciting now than it was last year when I set the room up.

Despite that, I have upgraded most of my system in the last year:rolleyes:

Projectors are fine, but where do you find the movies worth watching?

Good new movies seem rare, and older ones are harder to find after having a projector for 3 years or so and watching many.

For general viewing we find it more enjoyable to just to have the TV on and be able to read , look out the window, interact with family, etc at the same time. Same with HDTV, while it looks great on the projector, not much on network TV worth sitting in the dark to watch.

What are you all watching to keep the bulbs burning?

I know for me if it were just watching new films, I'd been in trouble early but it is new films and all the older ones , then restored, SE, Superbits, the HD version and now, on my new system , so the whole shelf is new again. I think as most on this forum we build in the concept of perpetual upgrades so it only stops when the ticker gives out.

The definitive answer that on one else dared to give:

3 weeks to a month for the initial supercharged thrill to wear off and become acclimated to the big picture; longer if you only watch movies on it and use something smaller for regular TV.

To just get a HOME THEATHER TO have a theater is pointless, stupid, and a waste of money. I think its awful that one would get a theater to just fit in, and I know people who do this and its very sad. Please stop now, sell all your gear and spend your money buying books or clothes! :) If your a movie fan, then invest in a home theater... If your just a casual film goer who doesn't enjoy watching movies alone 3-4 a week , or more for us real geeks, then this is not for you. You might have some friends come over time to time to enjoy your theater but you shouldn't make a theater for them, it must be for your own private viewings or else I think you're better off buying a simple TV and saving alot of money.

That's been the issue with me recently. I think of watching something, look through my selection, and then move on to something else.

When I do find something worthwhile watching, the enjoyment is still there.
