I've seen a few posts around claiming that HDnet broadcasts test patterns, but no info as to when. I would like to be able to set my HD DVR to record them so I can use them to calibrate my projector (panny L500) for the HD signal. Does anyone know a reliable timeframe that I could set the DVR for to grab these? If not on HDnet then another HD channel. I have HDnet/HDnet-Movies, HBO-HD, Discovery-HD, and INHD 1 and 2. Also my local PBS' HD feed.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I recently taped the HDNet test patterns (DVHS + 169time modded box). They were shown for about 10 minutes in the morning. You can download the HDNet schedules from their web site and see when they will be reshown.

Thanks!! I did just that (searched for 'test') and bam.. Tuesday May 25th @ 8am!!! I guess I was just thinking that theyd be inbetween shows, etc. rather than an actual scheduled item all to itself. Thanks again.

WanMan:

AFAIK, they are SooL. As for HDNet, I, and apparently others, have been hounding them to do this every day. (hey! 10-15 minutes? What's the big

deal? Put it on at 5a. if you need to, but do it!

The CSR's keep telling me, well it's mainly for our engineers' weekly tweaks, so, basically, GFYS.

Not necessarily. HD test tapes in D-VHS are available from at least two sources, Video Essentials & 169time.

I wish someone would broadcast a 720p test pattern OTA or on Satellite. The HDNET test pattern was definitely useful. Setting the HD-Tivo to 1080i ouput showed expected resolution and quality. Setting it to 720p on my 1280x768p monitor was pretty bad. So I guess the HD-Tivo does a poor job of downrezzing compared to my monitor.

Yeah, but then this assumes that the content source and delivery provider have not altered the content in the creation process or delivery process. Using SMPTE material will not necessarily delivery one an accurate picture, but more likely illustrate what the delivered form of the material is.

Since no one knows if the original material followed the standard, why should we attempt to assume and calibrate for source standard conditions?

Since every content source and delivery provider may change the picture, your only hope is to standardize on the ideal settings, hoping that the providers finally wizen up and get with the program.

I am giving you the professional approach to system setup. Your results may vary.
