When will reasonably priced 8K OLED's be a thing?

The only thing preventing me from wanting to buy an A80J this year, is the idea that 8K OLEDs from Sony and LG will be announced next year for consumer prices.....

Honestly it wont matter. A TV is too small to fully benefit from 4K let alone 8K. If you're sitting 4 feet from an 80" TV, you won't be able to tell 4K from 8K at that distance. I doubt anyone's sitting closer.

Says the person with a projector in his pic and in his profile.... I personally like to sit close to my tv's when playing games no matter how big the screen I am playing on. I suck otherwise

Having the projector puts me into a unique perspective of what's worthwhile. I sit 7 feet from my 4K 135" screen. I'm telling you if I were at 14 feet, I couldn't make out 4K vs 1080p. If you quadruple resolution, you need to sit at 1/2 the distance to see equivalent of it. For me to benefit from 8K on my 135" screen, I'll need to be under 5 feet away from the screen. Reduce that 135" to 85" and you have to be around 3 feet.

That, and the lack of 8k content would make it a waste for many years to come.

You ARE happy with your A90J aren't you? It's got you out here evangelizing about it. :D

It would mainly be for pc gaming and the youtube channels that make 8k material for the next few years.. There is a good chance that the mid-gen consoles refresh at the end of 2023 will offer 8k games ... 8K broadcasting on tv may not ever be a thing because of production costs, and 8K streaming on Netflix is probably at least 3 years out as well.. There have been articles that 8k Bluray may never even be a thing... I still wouldn't say there is no reason to buy an 8ktv now.... So are you guys saying 8k is not worth it until Netflix starts streaming movies in 8k?? I personally think that is a dumb reason to not buy an 8k tv now it you can benefit from it now, besides obviously the savings in cost by waiting
I don't see the benefit in 8K for quite a long time. If you have a PC, then maybe some gaming. Consoles won't be 8K for a long time, especially with decent textures and a decent frame rate.

Netflix may be 8K at some point, but you'll also need to pay for 8K bandwidth. Since a lot of companies have a data cap, 8K is going to push people over their monthly limit really quickly. A 4K stream can be over 50GB today.

Really high-speed cable internet and unlimited data have been quite normal the past few years In Canada at least. I would be surprised if the mid-gen console refresh won't have 8k option for games even if it is just 30fps.

One catch there is format support. Some early 4k TVs supported limited YouTube 4k content at the time but when 4k went mainstream some of the file formats widely adopted weren't supported on those TVs - leaving them out in the cold. If you get on the bleeding edge of 8k now before all standards are in place and it's mainstream there's a good chance you'll end up having to buy another TV when Netflix does offer 8k content or if a disc format materializes (I wish). If you buy TVs every 1-3 years that's not a problem. If you buy a TV expecting 5+ years out of it you might regret investing in 8k early. Especially when 8k TVs are now upscaling all currently available 4k content vs displaying it natively which opens a whole can of worms for degrading image quality through shoddy upscaling. Same principle as how some 4k TVs do a poor job with 1080p material.

Not in the US.

The PS4 promised 4K and 60fps when it launched. Even on the PS4 Pro, only a handful of games can do it and none of them are that impressive. For action games, I don't really see the benefit of 8K if you're limited to 30fps. I can't imagine playing a game like Nioh at 30fps.

uhhh-I only mentioned it because dude said something along the lines of "A80J is the best tv ever" lol.

My point is it isn't even the best tv of Sony's 2021 line...
Do people that clamour for 8k truly understand how ridiculously close they would have to be to even a large screen to even know it was 8k vs 4K or do they just think higher numbers are better just because??

I see the differences very easily on an 85 inch 4k tv when I'm using supersampling to 8k for pc games. I do agree that people should only buy 85-inch tv's for 8k, and anything smaller is dumb
Whenever it happens hopefully the 4K versions will be down to disposable prices.

Then burn in won't be a big problem.
What kind of Skynet future tech has your PC inside that make you think 8K would make sense?

Just a 3090 of course. No, I don't have a future GPU that hasn't been released inside my pc...
