When will the HD DVD players start outputting 1080p resolution?

Because all of the ones I've seen only do 1080i

Even though the movies are all in 1080p.

1080p isnt any better than 1080i for film based sources. (as long as your display/scaler does the proper inverse telecine)
My guess would be on second generation HD DVD players we will see 1080p output. Not that it's really needed but for PR reasons.
It's not needed? Then why even do it?

And to the second guy that answered this thread lol, you seem very wise so how about you take a gander at my other posts as well :) ?
How about reading the threads that already existed on this topic.
Because I'm apparently stupid... that and I didn't see any on my first skim. But if you'd be a pal and link me that'd be great. Searching = Not working for me.
Seems like Toshiba's HD-DVD laptop , available on May 12th, can output 1080p over HDMI...

I agree.

I know that current releases of HD-DVD are 1080p but the important factor it's 24frames/s. It's very highend 1080p HDTVs that can play back 1080p24 properly.

It's less expensive to support 1080i in HDTVs with 60fields/s and easier to convert 1080p24 movies too. I'm reading an article in the Sound & Vision magazine May issue on the Sharp LC-65D90U 65inch LCD. I quote the author, "Overall, Sharp's LC-65D90U is one of the best LCD TVs I've seen...". Also the Sharp's LC-65D90U is a full 1920x1080 screen and it doesn't support 1080P, to boot.

Well, sure if you ever only want to show 1080p24 film-based sources, you are correct. But we are being marketed now for 1080p60 (PS3, XBOX HD-DVD???, HTPC). Your argument would hold merit, if it were stated a few years ago.
