Our home won't be done until summer of 2005, so I'm curious if we'll see improvements to the Qualia by then (dynamic iris, something to help bulb life?)?

Any projectors that could possibly compete with Qualia that would be released next year Q3/Q4?

Qualia´s full name is Qualia 004 R1.

Yes a Qualia with an dynamic auto-iris is a possibility, it ought to be even likely.

Less likely is a laser Qualia that might come within a couple of years. People with knowledge say lasers are 3-5 years away. Still laser sxrd has been demonstrated. Hopefully this would solve the issue that always seem to accompany bulbs, light loss or color shift.

The best you could hope for is a Qualia with a dynamic auto-iris and that would certainly be spectacular enough.

You might see a 1080P D5 LCD that could be a serious competitor for a lot less money, I'd guess half the price. Good that you're looking ahead, now is the time to design the basic layout of your HT room, decide how big the screen is going to be and how far back you need to have the projector. These factors will have great bearing on your choice.

We're shooting for 144" screen, but haven't determined where the placement for the projector will be, at this point it can be pretty much anywhere (10 foot ceiling).

did not know about the R1, the other things I would add to the name

Qualia= new line of "highest end" products for all divisions of Sony (i.e. there are MP3 players, projector, camera......)

the number 004 is the model number. there does not seem to be any order, my guess is that when they decided to make the line as equipment was added to the list they just went up sequentially but obviously production time can vary explaining why the 004 is out but the 001 is not) on the other hand I would guess that if Qualia continues there will eventually be an other Qualia projector, but will it be an upgrade to this one or something different (my guess is that since Sony is still in the LCD projector market there might be an LCD Qualia) the same way that there is a 5 MP camera and a 2MP camera.

on the other hand on the question of "summer of 2005" I have no idea. On the plus side if you go to the Qualia site in the beginning there were 000-020 but they added to the range (they only say what is already out)
