When will we see the second wave?

1143 Views 19 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  slider33
I'm wondering when we will really start to see the crank turn on HD-DVDs second wave. HD-A2 and Xbox-360 add on should be showing up on store shelves in just 4-5 weeks and I would expect the wheels to start turning to get consumers interest piqued about HD-DVD.

Now is also the time for any big announcements in HD-DVDs favor, such as studios going neutral or new hardware vendors coming to market with product in the next six months. We've seen several "insiders" smiling over and over again for weeks about big announcements that are pending, when are they going to happen?

The only "new" stuff I've seen is the recent full length HD-DVD commercial trailer that played at my local theater when my wife and I went to see a film.

I want to see more new titles being released in HD-DVD announced.
I want to know what happened to Paramount. I wish they were more aggressive. Those two waves a while back and then nothing.

I agree. The lack of title announcements like Matrix and the new Harry Potter are concerns for me.
How many HD DVD players have been sold to date?

Are there enough out there to stand against all the Blu ray players coming out soon?

There are, or soon will be around 50,000 HD-DVD players sold and in homes. In the US there will be around 400K or so PS3s by the year's end.

However, we don't know how many of those will be used for movie playback. We also don't know how many Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on drives will be sold this year, we do know that 100% of those will be purchased for movie playback.
Like mentioned before where are the Paramount releases? How about New Line and Dreamworks? I'm not necessarily concerned at all but with all of the recent BD release news it would be nice to see HD news.
It's hard when I can't purchase an HD-DVD player locally. All they have available are BD players, which I already own. It would be nice to hear news on upcoming movies and G2 release dates. Unless I missed something.

Still only 50k? Is that US only or worldwide? I feel like I heard that number months ago. What a shame... Toshiba seems to have squandered the early advantages they had. So it would only take 13% of PS3 owners using their console for BD playback to match the HD DVD userbase. I'm guessing the actual number for PS3 playback will be much higher since Sony is marketing this console as a game AND movie player. If I were buying one at launch I'd use it for movies over a $1k+ stand alone player (which are also coming out before years end).

I love HD DVD and want it to prevail but there isn't much to be optimistic about lately. I'm hoping for some big announcements and HUGE sales for movies like Batman Begins and Kong.

Toshiba squandered?? I think we are still waiting for BR to even leave the gates. There is nothing optimistic about that either. The Panny just released and its marginally better than the Samsung. Is that optimistic as well?? Is it optimistic that hardcore HT people like us are even considering a "game" console as our main BR movie player? IMHO, I have more faith in someone that can actually put out what they talk about instead of hype, PR, and future promises. I think BR needs to handle the price vs performance issue, before it really takes off and go mainstream.

Good question. I think the only announced title they've got on the way is the MI trilogy. They've got a great catalog to choose from. Certainly they can put out a few more titles this year. They can start with the Jack Ryan series if they want to. ;)

Personally I do expect a huge price push on the A2 after the initial early adopter sales, we could see it in stores at $399 or less by the end of the year. I believe they are planning on producing the A2 in volume too, and I'm sure we will see some re-badged versions of it coming along also.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe what I had read from all these "insiders" was that the announcements would be coming in November, sometime around the launch of the 360 add on player.

I'd like to see:

Beverly Hills Cop

The Indiana Jones Trilogy

Star Trek 1 - 10

and those Jack Ryan flicks wouldn't hurt either

Only 50k units in homes since last April? YES - they have squandered it. It's easy to point out all the things that Blu ray has done wrong but with the support they have, they had some room to mess up. HD DVD has to work harder to take that support away from Blu ray and I don't see much evidence of it doing that. I personally feel that in a format war that hurts consumers, no format should get a second chance - but Blu ray IS getting one.

It's very sad but in a country where "Jackass 2" was #1 in theaters, hype, PR, and future promises can go A LONG WAY.

WOW 50K units were sold in the USA? That is nothing. One would expect at least 600K.

Imagine 400K SONY Playstation3's hitting the shelves in a few weeks, out of them most likely 30 percent will be used to play back DVD's. The hype about Blu-ray will sway someone that plays video games to also purchase a dvd br movie and play it on their PS3, to see the "Difference"...

Um, it's 50K HD players compared to maybe 10K or less Blu Ray players.

And the PS3 won't settle this, a little accessory from MS for the X360 is going to offer movie options for those who don't want a PS3 or can't get one.

well i'm not considering SONY in this , 50K HD-DVD's sold is not a lot, no wonder the movie studios dont care about releasing content.

I think Toshiba is taking too long to get their second Gen players out, the version with 1080p is supposed to launch in December, in other words probably jan, 2007.

What is the situation with Dreamworks anyway? Apparently they don't exist anymore except for the animation unit (they were sold to Viacom). Do they have a group that makes decisions on what to release and when (like Lucasfilm), and then Paramount just distributes their titles, or does Paramount have the full say?

If Paramount has a say, I hope one of the titles they will release when the HD DVD surge happens (Xbox add on launch & marketing blitz) is Gladiator... that would REALLY help.
