I finally settled on using Mineral Wool for its inexpensive sound dampening properties. However, I cannot find it anywhere. I finally e-mailed Roxul and they e-mailed me back saying it was only available in Canada. Is this right? I live in WI. Are there any similar materials that are more readily available?

Thanks again,

Chris

Yea, I got the same email. I found some locally from an insulation dealer/installer. They use it mainly for fire prevention in commercial settings but were more than happy to sell some to me. I first tried local hardware stores and none had ever heard of such a thing. My advice is to look under insulation in the yellow pages and start calling.

I got mine at Capital Building Supply in Vienna, VA (DC suburb).

Also another hint. The same supply houses that specialize in providing the metal studs and drywall material to the pros often stock insulation since a lot of the contractors around here who specialize in putting up walls and drywall often stuff them with insulation as part of the contract.

Roxul is probably spec'd more often in commercial applications so you are going to have to shop where the pros do and it's not at HD, Lowes or your corner hardware store.

It's a shame that Roxul insulation is not more readily available in the US. I was not aware of this. Up here in Toronto, Canada, it is right along side the Owens Corning and JM at our local HD. I am using the Roxul Safe'N'Sound. The cost per bag (60 sq ft.) is $3 more than the Owens Quiet Zone and the same price as the JM brands.

I am sure it is just a matter of time till it will be available at your nearest big box stores.

Look for Thermafiber. I checked their website for a contact number and called for a local distributor. The product I got is called SAFB. They also have something called Privacy Guard. Both are mineral wool products.
