So, back in January, when the world was clean and beautiful, and we were all filled with boundless HT energy and joy, Apex, V Inc and Kiss Technology all announced that they would be releasing DVD players that were capable of playing back WMV-HD titles. It now being October, and I'm kind of curious as to whether we will see the D3 or DP600 before Christmas (or ever).

Any thoughts?

The Sigma Designs press release is here: http://www.sigmadesigns.com/news/pre...ses/040107.htm for those interested in reading it.

Nothing, really. So, no new on Malata, or the D3, or anything? Are we really going to be stuck for over a year waiting for a new CE-based HD player?

why do you want something which im sure is why there is none with no content it also will not be backed up so there is no point in making something that you cant use. if you want wmv 9 use your computer for the almost no titles there are.

The IoData is shipping in Japan -- I read my first user comments on Amazon.co.jp (which is selling them with ships in 24 hours notice) yesterday. With a bad babelfish translation the only owner so far was complaining about a sound delay when playing 120fps video (but he does note most source material is 24 or 30fps). The buyer gave it a 2 out of 5 stars. I definitely want to see more reviews since the only reasons for 120fps is for shooting stuff which will have crystal clear slow motions and that isn't what most of us are looking for.

There are actually about a fifteen WMV-HD disks so far -- these players also can play DIVX-HD resolutions as well as most differtent types of audio and SD video formats that you can send across a network as well as being an upscaling DVD player and a flash media player for showing Digital pictures in Hi Res.

So far all of the Sigma Designs based players have been able to be made region free for DVD using either a hidden menu or hacks -- whether those loopholes exist in the iodata remains to be seen. I don't expect hacks that can defeat WM9 protected content though ...

I'd love to hear the real story re. this as these players seemed to promise much. There isn't that much commercial software out there, but there is plenty of 'home-made' hd stuff 'out there'.

My personal hunch is that Microsoft was promoting them as a way of holding a gun to the head of the rival HDDVD camps in order to ensure that they included microsofts codec in their specs i.e. go with Microsoft or we kill off your potential market with cheap to mass produce players, and cheap to reproduce disks.

But does your DVHS play MP3, WMA, DivX and all the rest across the network? This set will play a lot more the prerecorded WMV-HD.

Lots of people have HD receivers in their HTPCs and now we will have a player that can actually play compressed HDTV transport streams (compressed as Divx-HD or as WMV-HD. Before we only had the Roku and it was not the best player in the world.

How am i wrong? first there is not one movie company that is going to make REAL CONTENT because of some bottom of the basement company makes a player that is illogical. THERE IS NO CONTENT therefore it is a waste of money. and second sony for one which owns most studios is not going to support this nor are the studips that might support hd-dvd.

There's enough "extreme dvd" imax content out there that will be more than enough to show off my system. For a $250 player to do that is not bad. I can live with no wi-fi since wi-max is just around the corner but my big gripe is the lack of dvi. I'll let this one pass and wait for the D3 or the next iodata dvi version.
