Still waiting for my first PJ (4805.....) to replace an old 27" TV.

I use to watch (read !) a lot of movies with the subtitles on.

With my 4:3 TV, they're displayed directly on the (lowest !) black border when I watch a 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 movie, which is nice and not disturbing.

My questions: if I want to place the subtitles under the image with my PJ, will I have to build a screen that will have black bars (1.60:1) ?? Will I need a DVD player with some specific option ? How do you manage this guys ?

Thanks for replying !

Subtitles in DVD are rendered as separate images with a timecode to be displayed, they are simple bitmaps with a transparent color as background that the player interprets. Depending on the aspect ratio you specify at the player level, the apropiate subtitle set will be displayed (much like changing languages of the subtitle mid movie). The subtitles do get rendered within the movie frame since there is no more area left outside the movie frame.

When correctly setup, your PJ and your player, you don't have to worry unless the dvd title does not include widescreen titles.

Well I just look some DVD movies and it appears that all 2.35:1 subtitles are put under the image as my DVD sends the signal that I want to view a 16:9 (1.78:1) ratio.

But when the ratio gets to 1.85:1 or 1.78:1, the subtitles are displayed into the image.

Question 1: Does it mean that I'll only be able to have subtitles under the image when I'll watch 2.35:1 ?

Question 2: Does it mean that I will never be able to "place" subtitles under the image when viewing 1.85 or 1.78:1 ratio ?

Question 3: If answer to previous two questions are "Yes", I guess I'm OK to build a 1.78:1 screen in order to have subtitles on the screen, 'cause if I build a 2.35:1 one, they'll be displayed under it ??????

You've set your DVD player to play in 4:3 mode. In this configuration, subtitles will typically be in the lower black bar on a 2:35 movie but it will cross into the movie image when watching a 1.85 or 1.78 movie on occasion.

Buying a 4:3 FP and leaving the proj's setting to 4:3 will do the same as your tv but if you set the pj to 16:9 (or buy a native 16:9, like the 4805), the subtitles will be on the movie and the black bars, since the black bars on a 16:9 viewable image is less than on a 4:3. It will be less noticeable on

a 2.35 movie (narrower movie image = larger black bars) but if there's a lot of dialogue being written, it will still go on the movie image.

Are you considering building a 2.35 screen, then read this thread:
