Where is the "A/V Networking for dummies" thread?

1441 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  IVB
My head hurts! Where do I begin????

I am setting up a living room HT. All I have purchased so far are the 5.1 speakers, Denon 2310CI RCVR and Samsung LNBxx650 1080P LCD.

I have access to pull any cabling required from my Windows 7 PC to the HT closet. What do I need to buy to stream audio and video to my HT that is DLNA compliant? (I guess that is right?)

I am interested in internet radio, Pandora, locally stored music/movies etc. I'd also like to see the menus, album covers etc from my LCD display. I will be using a Harmony One remote.

I also use itunes but can migrate my music to WM12 too but itunes album covers on my LCD would be nice if I can do both. (plus I like being able to use my iphone remotely when using zone 2 on the deck outside)

Where is a 'dummy' thread to get me started????

I have a bunch of stuff about the 'ultimate pre-wire' in the site in my sig. It's way over the top, but gives you an idea about what to contemplate.
Just keep reading the threads that look intersting to you. I've been reading for quite a while (just started posting) and it's starting to gel, but there is so much to learn it's just going to take some time.

Unfortunately, I've never found that one magical thread, but I have found almost everything I've wanted to know.

Depends on the resolution you need - 2 cat6 cables (good minimum choice) will support component plus spdif or hdmi via baluns. HDMI is the only one that is dlna compliant and will allow full 1080p from protected sources (like blu-ray), but if you plan to distribute elsewhere in the home via a matrix switch, a lot of folks choose component (better distance, no key issues, etc)... All the info is in the link MurrayW provided (same as in my signature) -

I am still really confused over what equipment would meet my needs. I have read so much that it is all sounding like gibberish!!!

Blu-Ray standalone with 'something else' handling netflix/local media streaming???

Blu-Ray handling it all?

A better option, and what is it?

I need my mommy! LOL!!!

Do you want to distribute video throughout your home? Sounds like the answer is no.

I'd spend time in the HTPC subforum, since that seems to be the most difficult component to integrate into the system, at least to me. Your AVR will probably suffice to switch the video/audio sources, but I'm not too familiar with the 2310.

Patience is the key.

May wish to distribute video and audio to one or two locations but am not ready to address that issue at this point unless it affects my hardware choices now for networking.
This subforum is mostly for distributing AV to multiple locations.

I guess locating the hardware remotely could be considered distribution. To 1 location.

I bet your setup will be similar to most dedicated home theaters, with multiple sources hidden in a closet. Maybe that would be a good place to search and read, in the Home Theater subforum ?

Okay.......I guess I am mostly trying to figure out MEDIA STREAMING then.

I was not aware that this thread is mostly about DISTRIBUTION......

I'll try to find a more appropriate section.
Didn't mean to scare you off, just thought I'd try to help provide some direction.

Many people here in this subforum probably do what you want to do, but probably more people with media streaming knowledge in another subforum.
Not sure if its what your looking for but from you quote.

I don't know if it would work for your itunes stuff but you could use a PS3 as a stand alone blu-ray that would do the netflix/and local media streaming including blu-ray streaming. I don't know if it puts pretty lcd pictures up with music or anything of that nature.
I use SageTV as part of my solution, I have a pc-based server and their HD200 extenders @the TV location. It provides me a single GUI for:

- TV (recorded/live/etc)

- Ripped DVDs

- Ripped BluRays

- Home Movies

- CDs (although i don't use it for that)

- Netflix WatchNow

- Hulu

- Physical BluRays (although I don't use it for that as it requires putting the DVD in the server which is in my basement, so I use a different machine to rip the BluRays then I watch them)

I also use CQC which controls a squeezebox, which gives me access to online Sirius, Pandora, etc. I could use a touchscreen or PDA or ... and custom-paint a GUI, but i'm lazy so I stick with the Sage HD200 extender for the video stuff, and the touchscreen/PDAs for the other stuff.
