Where is the cutoff on the most for the least?

I'm a value shopper in that I don't mind paying for (and appreciate) real quality but I want value for my money. This means that there is a point of dimishing returns when one moves up the scale in speakers and other components so that the marginal dollar while buying a better component gets less and less of an increment. Given that criterion, where is this price point for the various HT components and which component models hit it just right?

Given today's state of the art what is the dollar amount where the next dollar only gives eighty cents worth of improvement in quality?

If you truly value great audio, then the best way to avoid spending more money is never A-B your gear against something better.

I guarantee you that if you start changing your digital cable to something like a Harmonic Tech Cyber Link Digital, then you WILL BE COMPELLED to shell out the $200 to get one.

Similarly, if you had a Bel Canto DAC-1 at home to play with, you can kiss good-bye another $1,300 - you will just have to buy it.

If you are happy with your current setup, then forget about it.

If you seek a great bang for the buck, than any better receiver from the likes of Denon or Yamaha will suffice nicely.

When you start really caring about the sound and start investigating things like separates, cables, tweaks, etc, then YOU ARE HOOKED. You wallet is at the mercy of your need for that next audio fix.

The previous poster says it well: RESISTANCE IS FUTILE !

These are the rules of reality, whether you like it or not.

1. The harder it is to tell the difference, the less difference it makes.

2. If you can tell the difference, you better be sure the difference clearly make one of the two better, or the difference doesn't make any real difference.

Worth is in the eye of the beholder.
