How much bad karma would it be if I were to audition some speakers from a local hifi store, return them, and then order online? Do online outfitters let you audition speakers, too?

How much money can be saved by buying speakers online (out of state), instead of from a snooty outfit on the peninsula? Would the bad karma be worth the money saved on a <$5000 expenditure?

Thanks!

Please don't do this!

No, I don't work for a retailer. Most real high end products can not be ordered online. Most can't be mail ordered if there is an authorized dealer in your area.

Doing things like this only drives the price of the retailers up, and can eventually put them out of business. Without retailers, we can never truly audition products, borrow them for in-home auditions, get good follow service, like warranty or setup, etc.

The only thing I'd advocate is buying from an out of state retailer to avoid sales tax. Tax sucks, esp on high end gear. I'd be nice if sales tax was on a sliding scale. Then I'd think twice about purchasing a $3k preamp in state, and maybe they'd get $100 sales tax outta me.
