Where to get good street prices on B&W speakers?

Hello,

I'm helping a friend set up a HT system in CT this week. We're pretty much set on which speakers, the question is what is a good price. It is easy enough to find MSRP but that isn't very helpful. I'm trying to find a good deal on some B&W speakers and short of driving from place to place and haggling it can be a challenge. It's a shame they don't have authorized dealers on line so you can get a ballpark.

If anyone is interested, this is probably what we'll end up with.

Yeah- I'm looking for B&W authorized - pretty sure I don't want to go that route.
You're going to have to haggle. Depending on the dealer, what you're buying and the history you have with them, this may or may not be a very effective method. B&W does not sell online.
There is a Stereo firm in SF CA called Harmony- { on West Portal St.}they are haveing a sale- on B&W speakers.

call them.

Thanks - I'm looking at their web page. I just gave them a call - no 604s, and everything else is display model only.

I appreciate it though.
I would not worry about Dispaly models with this firm... they don't paly anything long or loud enough to abuse any EQ.

good look,

Check around with local dealers, because you actually should be able to get decent deals on the 600 Series 3. This product line has been phased out and will be replaced by the Series 4 very shortly.

With that being said, B&W has a very tight dealer network. Getting good deals on B&W (or any other premier brand for that matter) is all about building a good relationship with your dealer.
what sale? went to harmony audio's web site. Saw no B&W's for sale. ??

is there any site that at least list the MSRPs of these things?
Thanks do you have any info about the series 4?

So if the dealer and you have a "relationship" you get a better price? What do you have to do, sleep with him? In the auto business a "relationship" typically means you get a worse price (although you think you're getting a good price because of the relationship and the dealer will take advantage of that fact). Is it different in the audio business?
I think most stereo stores are run like car businesses. You charge every penny you can until you can't. I think that is why people run to other market places. In any case, I do believe that, while you can typically get a 10-15% discount on *anything*, brands like B&W make their whole appeal out of the concept of "prestige" and how much you pay is equal to how much prestige you have. Trying to buy B&W at a good deal is almost completely nonsensical to me. If value is a primary consideration, there are other brands that give you much better value and many even have a very similar sound - Wharfedale, Kef, PSB, Paradigm, etc, though most of them would probably raise their prices if they could too.

Besides, those models are about to be replaced, so they should be *offering* you a deal at this point.

You seem to be insinuating that car businesses and most stereo stores are somehow unlike other businesses? Isn't that the whole point in running a business? To maximize your profit?

You may be running your store as a public service and working for free, I do not know, but generally speaking...
I saw this - since they are just a month away they may be worth waiting for - http://www.kundas.net/600s4.pdf

On a case by case, individual basis? I guess that just doesn't seem that fair to me or honest.

Sure. My point was that a dealer is not your friend, he's trying to maximize his profit. I don't make any profit off my friends. So this whole relationship thing is a bunch of crap. The salesman's job is to maximize his profit and the consumer's job is to pay as little as possible.

How is it that you decided on them?

You can also maximize profit by giving someone a favorable deal with good service and having them send in a whole bunch of friends

Of course it makes sense. The goal of negotiating a better deal is to pay the least amount of money for a specific product. In that context, whether it be a $6000 Rolex, $3000 B&W speaker set or $300 Surefire LED flashlight, I'm always going to make some effort to shop for the best price. Just because I can afford to pay MSRP easily doesn't mean that a 10-30% discount is not worth my effort, even if it's just the principle.

For me, buying luxury goods is fun, but getting luxury goods for a good deal is even more fun. I saw a $300,000 Bentley parked at a factory outlet mall. I guess I'm not alone in that thinking.
