Where's the 900lb Gorilla in 2010?

1772 Views 23 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  GoCaboNow
Last year, the big year-end holiday movie was Avatar. There were a number of other very good films in theaters around the same time.

The question is, what is going to be the big holiday film this year? I just can't work up any enthusiasm over something taken from a com....err....graphic novel. Those are strictly popcorn flicks to be rented once and forgotten in my book. Likewise, Harry Potter and Narnia are films my kid is anticipating, but I'm not (and she's 30 years old).

Most of the holiday releases announced so far leave me unexcited. I am kinda looking forward to the remake of True Grit by the Coen Brothers. It has been a few decades since I read the plain-spoken book and viewed the straightforward film taken from it, and I have learned that the Coens often produce multi-layered films made with a fresh perspective. But on the other hand, who could possibly replace Katherine Hepburn and the Duke?

The usual Oscar buzz seems to be absent this year. I enjoyed Inception and Red so far, but nothing else much springs to mind.

Are there any sleeper holiday films not getting publicity?

Tron Legacy will be the gorilla this year. I'm predicting it to be amazing, if not a masterpiece.

It was shot in the same way AVATAR was shot (stereoscopic cameras), and it seems to be a very deep and intriguing movie from what the trailers show. Jeff Bridges does more than reprise his role, he plays two roles in the movie. I can almost say with complete certainty after hearing the entire soundtrack (which destroy's Inception's ST) and watching the three trailers, that it already destroys the first Tron.

Time will tell if my predictions and statements ring true. I hope they will.

Gosh; they could've called this film anything but TG, gone in a totally different direction and might've come up with something interesting. Another remake?
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 will be the megafilm of 2010, though Tron will certainly give it a run for its money.

Harry potter definitely, the buzz is big over here for that film.

I have a feeling HP7 will handily beat Tron:Legacy when all's said and done. Unfortunately, the more I see the trailers, the mor I don't share FendersRule's gushing optimism about Tron: Legacy being anything close to a masterpiece. Tron will get a huge opening, no doubt, but I hope I'll be proven wrong and the movie turns out to warrant repeated viewings.

Possibly, but I think you are the only person who actually is not impressed by the progression of the trailers.
I'm finding it hard to develope any enthusiasm for Tron: Legacy as well. It probably has something to do with not buying the original premise, because I know too much about how computers work, because I design them for a living. The original TRON was a minor work for me.

Although SF is my favorite genre, very few films make it onto my "Top Ten" list. Avatar made it's place last year, I don't hold much hope of another SF film of that caliber, but there is usually a good drama to be had during the holiday season to contrast to the vast numbers of teenage films.
^ I don't think you really have to design computers to realize the premise of Tron is BS. It's like saying "I know too much about gravity to enjoy any stunt in an action movie"

Thankfully I am usually able to set aside my knowledge of such things for movies such as this (I am less forgiving in "realistic" movies where they hack into the FBI database in 2 seconds).
I hope we get a 900lb gorilla and not a bunch of Lemurs like we have been getting this year...

This has been a great year, sorry you're missing out! :p

Oh, I have not missed out. But I assumed you meant what heavy hitter movies might be coming down the pipe. My point was there have not been many good heavy hitter movies so far this year - so I hope there are some coming. Below are the top 10 grossing movies of the year so far.

Alice in Wonderland as the #2 movie of the year and Clash of the Titans at 10, plus a bunch of animated movies does not seem like a stellar year for me. I love me some good animated movies but I would expect a few better live action movies to be in the top 10.

This year, like most years, there are plenty of great movies that did not do well at the box office. I grade a year based on these and how the supposed heavy hitters of the year did. IMO, this has been a poor year, so far, for the heavy hitters or 900lb gorilla level movies.

1 Toy Story 3 BV $414,317,223

2 Alice in Wonderland (2010) BV $334,191,110

3 Iron Man 2 Par. $312,128,345

4 The Twilight Saga: Eclipse Sum. $300,531,751

5 Inception WB $291,506,627

6 Despicable Me Uni. $248,352,545

7 Shrek Forever After P/DW $238,395,990

8 How to Train Your Dragon P/DW $217,581,231

9 The Karate Kid Sony $176,591,618

10 Clash of the Titans (2010) WB $163,214,888

I agree, take the kiddie movies out of the list, and whats left? For people like me who dont watch kiddie movies, this has not been a big blockbuster year.

I'm actually one who is growing less impressed with each trailer. The first trailer that just showed the light bike scene was cool and intriguing because it was the first we'd seen of it (at least it was for me). Each other trailer I've seen has made my optimism waver a bit.

I just hope you are not lumping in TS3 as a "kiddie movie" though? If you do, you are sorely missing out on too many great films that have been made by the minds at Pixar, esppecially this one which like Up should most definitely be up for a Best Picture nomination.

I really enjoy the kiddie movies when I watch them with my kids - and there are some really good ones that offer alot for adults as well. At this point, if I am going to watch a movie with other adults, or by myself, I can't see doing a Pixarish movie. Maybe when the kids are out of the house I will be forced to re-evaluate this. But right now it just smacks too much of getting caught wearing my wife's under garments...

Dudes..that's why I have a HT!!. I watch what I want, when I want. I've seen all three Tinkerbell's, and I'm glad I did (the second one was the best IMO
). Let go and have some fun.
