I'm looking to jump into the world of linux for a media extender. I know of geexbox and the in development of XBMC. Is there site that has a comprehensive listing of my other options?

Looking for an easy to install distro with high hardware compatibility and low cpu requirements.

It sounds like Geexbox is what you want to use.

As a media extender/set top box equivalent, it is excellent.

Just use the ISO builder gui avaible at the Geexbox site, set the options, create the ISO, burn to a CD and you're done.

I wouldn't go lower than a P3 500Mhz with 128MB myself, but they claim lower cpu and 64MB is doable (SD video only, of course).

If you want to play source video resolutions higher than 480p, you'll need more CPU speed and 128MB.
