Which < $600 reciever to buy?

401 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Cheddarhead
Recently I bought a Panasonic TX-55FZ800E as a first step in my upgrade.

Now I need a descent reciver to be able to send 4k material to it :)

My setup right now is:
*Panasonic TX-55FZ800E
*Onkyo TX-SR508
*Intel NUC8i5BEH (HDMI 2.0a)
*Dynavoice F-6 EX v2 (5.0)

I feel like im missing to be able to watch 4k-content as it was meant to be due to the HDMI 1.4 limit I have with my current reciever.

I havent followed the development of recievers the last ~10 years so I dont know which ones to look for.

I have a few requirement though:
*2160p (24,25,30,50,60p)
*HDR/HLG/Dolby Vision
*Max price about $600

And ofc as good sound-quality as possible :)

Bonus is:
*THX-certified
*Bluetooth

I´ve been looking on the net and found a couple of recievers that fullfills my requirements:
*Sony STR-1080
*Pioneer VSX-933
*Onkyo TX-NR656
*Onkyo TX-NR686

All tips are much appreciated!

And sry for my bad English :)

Best regards

I personally would go with the Onkyo 686. More robust amplifier section to provide more dynamic headroom for the time in movies when you need it. Considerably less expensive than the Sony 1080.

You can grab a new onkyo 787 for 480$ plus tax on amazon or a newer model - onkyo 797 open box from bestbuy for 570$ plus tax for a used one on amazon for 550$ plus tax from one call
both are 9.2 channel thx certified bluetooth and 4k hdr support. The newer model just has some more features coming like imax enhanced etc.
Thanks for the quick replies!

Ok, well..I´ve always liked my 508 so Onkyo is a good brand in my eyes. Thing is that I havent been following the market at all so I thought it would be better to ask any of you who are more experienced.

Looks like it´s got a descent score.

Well, im a bit sceptical when it comes to buying electronic goods from other countries in case anything will break.
I live in Sweden and I dont know how it will be with warranty, sending the item...etc...if im unlucky...

And, I have no clue what the price ends at including taxes and import duty...

Other than that, they sound like a great buy!

what voltage do they use in Sweden? You might have a compatibility problem if you purchase a US model, possibly warranty issues too.

You should probably put Sweden as your location so folks won't send you links with USA pricing.

Yeah youre right! I´ve added the location now. Sry about that.

Voltage is 230.
that Onkyo nr686 doesn't have switchable voltage on the power supply as it is 120V. You'd probably be better off buying in Sweden.

Yes thats what I think to. Both regarding voltage and warranty.

Again sry for not mentioning or/and adding my location earlier.

The recievers I´ve listed fullfills my requirements but im unsure which one of them (or any other not listed) is the "best" bang for the bucks.
And the the one/brand thats most reliable :)
I really like my Sony 1080 and so does What HiFi.

What HiFi STR-DN1080 review

Currently available for ~$450 US.

I really like that it is both send and receive for bluetooth, not all bluetooth receivers support send for bluetooth headphones.
