Which Budget Receiver Is Best For BD Players That Output PCM?

1539 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  MidnightWatcher
After upgrading my speakers I want to upgrade the receiver to one that can accept PCM for TrueHD and DTS-HD MA soundtracks, I don't necessarily need one that can decode the codecs since I'll be using the PS3. Which receiver is better - the Yamaha RX-463 or Pioneer VSX-918V-K? From what I've read the Yamaha already has one knock against it due to BTB and WTW clipping via HDMI. What are the pros and cons for each?

How about telling us what type of speakers you have? Some speakers work better when combined with the right avr. You should also consider Denon and Onyko.
I have Polk RTi6 for fronts, RTi4 for surround, CSi3 center and a PSW505 sub, I know they're not top of the line but for the price I paid I couldn't say no.
I'll consider any others 'budget' receivers as well, but would like to know what makes them stand out above the Pioneer and Yamaha receivers.

Any other opinions?
I tried 3 different receivers. I first tried the Sony 720. I didn't like it because it just seemed to lack power. It passed "BTB".

I then tried the Yamaha 463. I really liked how it sounded but it didn't pass "BTB". Also had problems with my PS3 on it. Sometimes the colors would go to pink or none at all when playing Blu ray movies. Also there would be a static sound when switching games or movies. I tried differnet HDMI cables and two different yamaha 463 receivers. I took it back.

I then got a Pioneer 918. This one was perfect. It had plenty of power and sounded great and passed "BTB". I am using my PS3 as a bluray player and it works great. I am still using my onkyo HTIB speakers with a velodyne VX10 sub and sound it sounds good. I am going to upgrade speakers next.
Thanks for the info splatee, I figured the 918 passed BTB and WTW since nobody complained about it so it's nice to see confirmation. The few reviews I've read said it was a very good receiver for the price and Future Shop has it right now for CA$299, which is the best price I've seen so far here in Canada.
Just found a 918 in stock locally, I think I got the last one.

I came to the very same conclusion when I pulled the trigger!
Yep, FS it was, sometimes they have some good deals on speakers.
