I have a 7.1 system with the denon 2805 reciever. VERY disastified with the sound from my philips 5960 dvd. I am more concerned about sound than pic. Any suggestions. Not getting the separation I think I should be getting. Looking to keep it about $150 or less

One of the major things you get as you go up in price with DVD players is better audio DACs. So for a budget player, which is what you are asking for, you generally sacrifice audio. Check out the Oppos for excellent upscaling players that also are reported to have pretty good audio for the money. If you are serious about top level audio, then you're going to have to spend more (the Denon 2930 is one suggestion; a used Pioneer 59ai or Denon 2910 are other suggestions). Another option is to upgrade your receiver, and then use the audio DACs of the receiver.

Was looking mainly for separation when watching a movie. More realistic sounds going from back to front or left to right. Is the more expensive Oppo for $229 have a better sound processor. Can you get a decent DVD with SOUND for around $300.

How is the player hooked up to the reciever?

Excellent question. It you're hooked up via digital such as optical or coax, then the problem is your receiver, not the player. You're only using the player's audio DACs if you're hooked up via analog outs.

Sound works fine on my onkyo but the onkyo is an 8 year older player, wanted to get a new player, when I play coax on my philips it goes to only the front and center speaker. WOrks better with rca on the new player.
