I'm looking at bidding on a used HD receiver. Any recommendations? It will feed a new Panasonic 42" ED Plasma. The Panny has HDMI and Component in.

There are old Samsung SIR-TS160's, Panasonic TU-HDS20B's, Hughes Hird-E8's, D*TV H10's, Phillips DSX 5500, and other miscellaneous ones.

The Sony's command much higer prices even though they are essentially the same. The biggest difference is that the Sony remote has controls for resolution, the LG and Hughes don't. Supposedly the Hughes has less memory and a few less features.

Here is how I would rank them highest first.

Sony HD300/LG LSS3200a (essentiall the same model)

Hughes HTL-HD

RCA DTC210

Zenith SAT HD520/Sony HD200 (essentially the same model)

DirecTV H10

Samsung TS360

Toshiba DST3100

I would avoid all others since they are older generations.

Make sure anything you buy has a DOA return policy at the very least.

I had the Panasonic TUHDS-20 and it had the best picture of any HDTV unit so far, but it had video dropouts all the time. Now I have a Samsung TS360 and it has been perfect in every way for over two years.
