Which first? baseboard/doors or carpet?

425 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Mntneer
I'm getting close to having to make this decision, and wanted to see what the general consensus was. I'd prefer to do the trim and doors first so I can paint them easier. It should be mentioned that I won't have carpeting going under any doors (At all the doors, carpet will transition to tile on the other side).

If I do the baseboards before the carpet, is there a rule of thumb for how high above the floor to install them?

Thanks!

Hang your door, trim it out, slap up your baseboards (3/8" above subfloor).
1. Door

2. Carpet

3. Baseboards

That's my preference. I think it's easier to put up the baseboards after the carpet is in. Of course, they should already be painted/stained.

If you'll be using shoe-molding (quarter-round), then that's the only thing I'd do after carpeting.

Ain't that the truth. I got in a hurry when we had to finish out basement and only got half of my moldings primed, and none painted. It made my job of painting afterwards a huge pain in the butt.
