Which HDTV sat. recvr. setting to use w. std. def. Panny?

457 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  snidely
I've had my 42" std. def. Panny for about 15 months. I have a DISH 6000 HDTV recvr. that offers to HDTV output settings: 1080i or 720p. Which one should i use for best results? I now have all networks available in HDTV, rather than just one or two.

(I must have asked this when I first got the plasma, but can't recall and couldn't find anything in doing a search.)

Thanks.

The main problem w. HDTV - it makes watching anything else almost unbearable!

The Panasonic ATSC tuner I got with my SD Panny only outputs 1080i, 480p, 480i. Since Panasonic didn't include 720p, you can infer what you will. Try comparing and see, then post it. I would imagine it'd hardly make a noticable difference.
I've been looking at both 720p (abc) and 1080i (everyone else) for over 2 years on my Panny and I haven't seen any consistent difference. They both look great. What frequently DOESN'T look great is conversion done by a tuner. For example, I use a separate S-video connection from my stb for all SD broadcasts, since the box's up-conversion on the HD output often looks worse. So, you may be best changing the tuner's output to match the resolution of the signal. Try it and see.
Spoffo - Thanks to your invite to view your plasma nearly 1.5 years ago, i was "sold". and became a plasma person shortly thereafter.

Now there is more HDTV available it occured to me the settings on the sat. receiver mite make a diff. I'll make use of your info about ABC doing 720p and everyone else 1080i and do some tests when i'm alone so i won't drive wife crazy. As a practical matter, no one is going to bother changing settings on the receiver everytime one surfs between ABC and the others.

I'll report back. My HDTV source is solely via BEV's HDTV offerings (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS both from Boston and Seattle). I hope/assume BEV doesn't mess w. the signal they retransmit to make this test valid. They also have Fox on their "HDTV" offerings, but of course Fox doesn't do real HDTV. I assume it is better than SD.

Well, i finally tried to make my own test. It would be easier to do if there were test patterns available on the various channels. With the picture constantly changing, by the time you change the settings and switch back and forth, it is really not a very good way to test.

First of all, I got rid of the RGB connection I has used since the beginning, and now use component inputs. I had even pd. for a top of the line cord. Using generic compnent def. provides a better overall picture by a very noticeable degree.

In looking at PBS demo feeds, both on the east and west feeds, the 1080i setting seemed better to me. OTH, on CBS, the 720p setting on the sat. recvr. seemed better. I'll do a further test on ABC and NBC. As mentioned, this is very subjective.

P.S. Just "tested" NBC. Didn't notice much difference between the 1080i setting and 720p setting, altho i would give a slight edge to the 720p setting. Again, i think the only way of really doing a test like this is with a static image, if not a test pattern.
