I'm on the XMC-1 waiting list at Emotiva, and I figure it might be six months or more before it ships to me. In the mean time, I'm finally upgrading to HDMI-equipped gear and a 1080P projector (hooray!).

I'm looking for a "hold-over" receiver - something to tide me over and then sell on this forum or ebay. All I need is adequate amp power (or pre-outs), HDMI switching, and decoding for the lossless audio formats (my Blu is a Panny 35, and doesn't decode). I'm not worried about auto setup, etc. Resale value is the only other criteria!

I was thinking about an Onkyo 805 refurb, as its video scaling limitations shouldn't be a problem for me (all my sources will output 1080), but I don't need the amps (or heat), and the refurbs are getting ahrder to find.

I'm considering the H/K AVR-254 (has pre-outs, so the wimpy amp section doesn't matter), the Onkyo 606, and the Pioneer 1018. Are there any major grounds to choose between the three? All appear to be in the $360-425 range.

Thanks for any suggestions!

805 refurb is a fantastic idea. It will meet all your criteria. It does have Audyssey MultiEQ XT which is good room correction and even has detailed filters for a sub if you have one. It also can handle 4 ohm speakers.

805 has a much better amp section than the 606. The only thing the 606 has going for it is Audyssey Dynamic Volume and EQ. If you're looking for a holdover, the 805 is probably better.

While it's a holdover for much more than 6 months for me, I was toiling over the same decision, between the same receivers recently. I went with the 1018, mainly based on an overall feeling reading user experiences and my past experience with the 1014. I never really found much negative written about the 1018 and am very happy with the purchase.

FWIW.
