Hi all,

I live in a pretty harsh and dusty environment, in the middle of the Australian outback. I really want to set up a home theatre but I am wondering what you think would be the better technology for this kind of environment, DLP or LCD?

Cheers

DLP ... it is the only unit you will be able to find with sealed optics.

However, not all DLP's have sealed optical paths. You will need to check the specific unit you are looking for.

If you are handy you could create a hush box for any type of projector which would incorporate filters to remove dust before it had a chance to enter the hush box.

I know there are tons of threads around here about hush boxes - they may give you an idea or two.

I only suggest this as I'm cheap and sealed optics aren't :)

Via holes on the bottom of the unit ... you pop off some covers and pump air onto the LCD panels to clean off the dust.

FYI ... I agree with Scott's point about a hush box. That would solve the problem as well. Depending on your budget though, sealed DLP units can be affordable (ex. NEC LT240k has sealed optics)

Forget DLP or LCD... go HEPA.

Umm, buy a hushbox (not for sound, but for air filtration) or an air cleaner and be done with it.

"Sealed Optics" ala NEC LTK series is a joke. Don't even try to rely on these as a means of keeping dust out. Hell, the NEC doesn't even have any filters inside the unit at all!

Build a hushbox with filtration, it's what I'll be doing if/when my LT260K gets back from being serviced.

Anyone notice that the new PLV-Z3 from Sanyo has holes that you blow air into to get rid of dust on the panels? You use a bulb-blower, LOL.
