Which is better? Decoding in player or in receiver?

Is there any difference when the decoding of audio codecs is done in the player or in the receiver?

I'm curious to know because I'm interested in the new High definition audio tracks on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

Also, which generally comes out first? Players that decode or receivers that decode the codecs?

Yes some players are better and some receivers are better. It just depends on which 2 you are comparing.

Since there is no receiver or external decoders that decode the new High definition audio tracks on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray your only option is the player. So it looks like the players come out first. This was the same case for the first DVD players that came out. They decoded DD and DTS in the player. Receivers that will decode the new HD audio formats probably will not show up till next year sometime.
