Which is the smallest ATI-Model capable of vmr9 1080p ?

I have seen Nvidia 6800gt coming into trouble to playback smoothly 720p in VMR9 (using ZP+Dscaler+ffdshow), and I am very happy with my x800, but for a cheaper computer I need to build: how smal of an ATI model could I use without coming into trouble with VMR9 ?

You should be able to have smooth 720p video with this low-profile ATI x700, which is the smallest ATI card I have seen that can handle HD video reliably: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131421

ATI also has the x300 in a small, low-profile card, but it's not powerful enough to handle 720p video.
Is this true???

Is this why I am having trouble getting VMR 9 to play smoothly in higher resolutions?

Apparently my CPU is only at ~75% but I get occasional lagg for a second with VMR9 that isn't apparent with overlays...

I would have thought that this relatively high-end video card would not be the problem. Please fill me in.
arcticool, which card do you use ? What I described exactly happened on a 6800gt with VMR9, not in overlay, so the card can become the botleneck and with 1080p I can imagine ebven more data is transferred as in VMR9 the video image is regarded as 3D and therefore the 3D-power of your card becomes the limiting factor. It would be interesting though if you stuttering disappear if you switch of all AF and AA filtering of the card as it does not help for video.
You might see if you can find the new ATI X1300 Pro in a small format card since with the Cat 5.13 drivers at least one set of test showed in to have better PQ than the NVIDIA cards. and it is less expensive and its Memory Bandwidth is fully capable of processing 1080i HDTV inputs and outpluts with dropping frames.

Yep, I have a 6800GT and have problems with stuttering with VMR @ resolutions higher than 720p. Real bummer cause VMR9 really looks the best but I'm using overlays and some denoise 3d and sharpening and 1080i is smooth. Still not nearly as clean as VMR9 @ 1080i but the studders are just unacceptable. If you find a fix, besides a new video card, please post!

Thanks,

AC
Does your audio also stutter? If so look for updated audio drivers or a shared IRQ problem with your graphics card and another card. I assume that you are using DVD Decoder .185 and Nvidia drivers 81.95. Do you have problems with both live and recorded 1080i TV programs.
arcticool, you need to run VMR9 fullscreen renderless to avoid stuttering/tearing w/ Nvidia cards. A few players support this.

Can you explain why you are making this assertion? I run my 6600GT all the time with no stuttering or tearing running VMR9. TheaterTek with FDDSHOW full screen or windowed with no problems at all.

I believe I've read that ATI recommends the 1800 series for 1080p and that you can't get 1080i with this card.

This has been a known issue and there a several threads about this.

TT uses renderless w/c is very compatible w/ Nvidia cards.

If you don't have this issue, then feel quite fortunate because 99% are not as lucky as you.
I am playing 1080p WMV discs with my lowly ATI 9700 pro with hardware acceleration enabled with no problem. The CPU load is not too high and I even run ac3filter to re-encode the multi-channel output to DD5.1 on the fly.

My CPU is a 2.8GHz P4 and my output resolution is 1360x1024. Hardware acceleration did make a difference with this setup.

Cheers

Thomas
I would not expect much CPU load with a 1080p souce since there is no de-interlacing or motion compensation required just decoding. It is a 1080i source that can cause high CPU and Hardware acceleration workloads.

I found the solution to the NVidia VMR9 Stutter problem-

Basically get the latest ZP, the latest FFDShow, and in ZP DVD settings select VMR9 Renderless, in Filters check *both* 'Exclusive VMR9' and 'Enable YUV Mixing', it was this combo that someone else recommended and its the best picture I've ever seen on this TV anyway.

Good luck-

Thanks for the tip but I'm a long time Radeon user w/ no problems using VMR9 rendering. I simply hate renderless that turns my HTPC into a STB DVD.

As stated originially, I intend to use the combo ZP+dscaler+ffdshow. Therefore no acelaration of 1080p playback by the card, as the CPU is doing all the hard work. Nevertheless: For VMR9, what is the smallest card which plays it back savely. Anyone using a x800 with only 12 pipes sucessfully ? Than a x800gto would be sufficient.
