I am looking to spend about $500 for speaker system.

What is the better system?

Klipsh HD500

Energy micro 5.1

Polk RM 705

Harmon Kardon HKTS 18

or do you have another suggestion?

for use in basement, hooked up to PS3 for gaming and HD video

Basement is "L" shaped, about 1400 sf of space but the audio/entertainment system is located in the top 2/3 of the ! part of the "L" space which is probably around 500 sf. I am looking for good sound for movies/playing video games, and although noise transmission to above floor seems low, I do not plan to turn up the volume to extremes since there is a bedroom above.

Of all of those the Harman Kardon look best because the speakers are bigger.

The micro speakers that only go down to 150Hz wouldn't be my first choice...the HK is decent as far as satellite speakers go.

Also look at Energy Take speakers. Here a good combo -> http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.343753

...and a few options that aren't very well known:

Pinnacle -> http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...9&sku=A3319353

Pinnacle has been around a long time but is more familiar with custom installers.

EMP -> http://www.emptek.com/cs100_specialx.php

Which is a brand created by RBH Sound to offer no frills speakers. They're not very efficient speakers though.

...but I'd probably go for the Energy Take package.

Thanks for the reply everyone.

I think that instead of buying a "cheap" set now, I am going to build a little by little

I think I am first going to buy a receiver, and purchase speakers later (I have a pair of KLH speakers which I could use for the short term).

I am looking at the Denon AVR 590 and the Onkyo TX-SR507 which are both in the same price range (roughly $350 or less). I noticed that there is a Denon AVR1610 which costs a little bit more, but I can't figure out if the cost difference is worth it. Are these receivers good for future expansion?

Good option, mayhem13. Another could be these:

MORDAUNT SHORT Ms300 5 Piece Speaker Package Maple

Which leaves another ~$200-250 for a subwoofer.

I like these speakers myself. Add an HSU STF-1 when it goes on sale and that's a nice little system.

The 507 has Audyssey 2EQ whereas the 590 has MultEQ. That alone tips the scale towards Denon for me. The 590 and 1610 are basically the same receiver.
