As all AVS members know, movie sound is just as important as the visuals, and the sound mix can make or break the home-theater experience. Is the dialog clearly intelligible? Are the sound effects and music well integrated? Is the surround soundfield cohesive? The Academy Award nominees for Best Sound Mixing are all worthy of consideration, but which one do you think will deliver the most compelling, enveloping aural experience in a home theater?

Gravity for me. Saw it in digital imax 3d at amc in rockaway and enjoyed the immmersive surround sound. The Bluray release keeps that trend going. As for the hobbit, that sound mix was pretty good especially with scenes involving Smaug. Don't care for the other three.

I've now seen the top two vote getters on bluray and I must say that while I'm a huge LOTR fan, the sound mix in Gravity is mind-blowing. The opening sequences are incredibly seamless and enveloping and truly create an ambience that is really something to behold.

Voted for Gravity, the mix is truly outstanding. It's so good even the end credits audio kept us in the theater.

Rush could have easily replaced two of the movies on the ballot, Some of the best car audio I've ever heard. I haven't seen All is Lost yet, but it's on my BR stack and I'm really looking forward to it.

Of these, the Gravity movie is a no brainer. Still waiting for my bluray disc, I just watched a vudu rental in HD. So massive and engulfing home theater experience I not often hear. Really look forward to the bluray, guess I have a lot of subtle details in the soundtrack to look forward to!

Hobbit was kind of disappointing. I really look forward to the second part of that saga

Does the Gravity rental from Netflix have lossless or lossy audio? I hope it is the former!

Odd as this may sound, but the silence in Gravity, is one of the best pieces of film audio I have heard in a long time. It left a perfect hole for the music to fill, and it did that quite beautifully. Unscrewing a bolt to music, will never sound as good in any other film I suspect.

Not an Oscar nominee but I just watched a movie on blu ray called Counselor. The movie wasn't that great but I thought the sound mixing was quite good. The use of rear left and right channels was far better than most.
