Which player to wait for come Christmas 2008?

1991 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  quikric
Come Christmas 2008 will the Samsung 5500 be the best duo player that you'll be able to buy?

Will Samsung or another company produce something better?

If no one does produce a better duo player by then would the situation be bleak or is it possible that Toshiba might still produce maybe the last duo player come 2009?

Who can predict what things will be like 10 months from now? If I could do that, I could become a millionaire.

I think the important question to ask is: Which will be the best player come Easter 2010.

Seriously, there is no way of knowing for sure what will happen ONE month out let alone 11. We don't even know for sure if the 5500 will ever be released -- look at what happened to the Samsung 2400 a few months ago.

You have to decide when you want to buy a player, and then buy the best one at THAT point. There will ALWAYS be a better player around the corner.

I'd wait for the 5500 but I will say this--if the state of the art in duo players doesn't exceed the 5500 then dual players won't be around very long.

Keep in mind that the 5500, despite the higher number, is a lower end unit compared to the 5000 due to the lack of the Reon processor (for upscaling regular DVDs.) There is also some indication that it will be using the same Broadcom chip, which would mean that it's feature set in terms of everything else will be identical to the 5000. At this point (i.e. before the 5500 is actually finalized and released) I would take the 5000 over the 5500.

As a Red guy looking twords the future,I too am curious about this.

It would be nice that if HD-DVD does lose out, that Toshiba would come through with a decently priced Combo player.

If I need to go Purple,I would prefer to have a single player solution with Toshi's name on it

I'm really hoping samsung can eventually solve the 5000 issues, so I can get one used late next year at a lower cost to replace my A1.

Then again, this would mean getting a first generation blu-ray player from Toshiba, which is likely to bring with it some "1st time out" glitches.

Very true.

So its back to either the LG,the Sammy 5500 if it appears,or a two player solution.

This whole format war has been one giant pain in the
