I have a pair of old dbx-1a speakers which have a dedicated equalizer. I currently use them with a Yamaha DSP-A1000 integrated amp. This works fine because the EQ is placed in the pre out - main in loop.

BUT, if I wanted to use a separate power amp (with all else remaining the same) I understand that certain power amps will not work. For example, some years ago I was considering an Adcom 565(?), but I was informed it would not work with my set up. The electrical reason was over my head.

Once again I am considering a similar setup, with a vintage McIntosh, Yahama, or maybe even Onkyo power amp from the 80s. I know it's silly, but I grew up craving those amps and their front panel displays.

Could anyone explain to me how I can discern which amps will work and which ones won't? If someone could just point me in the right direction it would help, because I don't have a clue as to how I could Google this issue.

Thanks.

hmmm...

i can't find much detail on those speakers (but from what i could, they look like absolute BEASTS!), but from what i read, i can't see any reason why there should be any problems... for the most part, an amp is an amp... it takes what it gets, amplifies it, and sends it on...

do you have any links to specs/design on the speakers that we can take a look at?

Sorry, no links.

The guy who told me the Adcom would not work was E. Brad Meyer, who used to write regular columns for Stereo Review, etc. so I think he was probably correct.

I got the impression that the Adcom was a somewhat different design than most power amps, as opposed to there being anything unusual (in an electrical sense) about the dbx speakers or equalizer. But I also got the impression that the Adcom design was not unique, so that's why I'm asking.
