Which projector should I choose?

2018 Views 14 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  LePretre
Hello!

Well I recently decided to buy a projector but I have a really small budget: only 400$.

I'm going to be honnest: I don't know anything about projectors! That's why I came here by the way.

I have selected few ones but maybe you could help me more?

What do you think of these projectors:
  1. Optoma DS317 (379$)
  2. Optoma PK301 (364$)
  3. ViewSonic PJD2121 (410$)

And what could you advise me please?

Thank you!

PS: I also found a Sony VPL HS10 (used) for 500$ on Ebay. It is outdated?

Hang in there. Church beckons, but there will be an effective answer soon.

However, look at 1280 x 800 resolution PJs. They present a 16:9 format and even if your a total NOOB and entry level PJ'er, you don't want to start out with the older, outdated 4:3 formatting.
Thank you for your answer. Well, could you tell me which one (between the list) should I choose?

Thanks again
How did you get these 3 selected?

More importantly, what will you be using the PJ for, and will it be in a light-controlled environment? Someone who wants to show blu-ray movies in their living room is in a different set of needs than someone who wants to watch DVDs in their basement or someone who really just wants it for NFL games.

Thank you for your answer. Actually I just went to Amazon and selected the international shipped projector organized by the number of stars (and yeah I'm a real noob
)

I would like to watch DVDs in my bedroom, and yes it is a light-controlled environment.

Thanks again !

Where are you located?

I know that I won't be much help for international experience, but others have it, and perhaps they can help point out what has been purchased & shipped successfully, or purchased more locally.

Always good advice if one can find another member with a model to show.
Thank you very much for your answers guys. Well I live in Morocco so I think it will be difficult to find someone living there too.

I actually have been to Morocco for an AV install a while ago (Rabat to be specific...flew into Casablanca)...beautiful country for sure...

Though I know exactly what you mean by not likely finding a demo. Heck that is why the client paid us to fly all the way there!

Bump! Could you please help me? I would like to order a projector before the end of the week if possible.

Thanks again
Why can't you buy a projector from a local distributor, sorry I'm not familiar with Casablanca, but I would imagine there should be one no? Also this way you would be accessible to warranty. You won't have your projector warranted if you purchase it from the U.S.

Don't purchase from eBay. Please don't. It's like playing Russian roulette with yourself.

Eliminate the PK301 off your list. And I agree with MississippiMan, as these are not ideal choices. But 4:3 is doable.... depends on your preference, as MississippiMan stated and most users will say 4:3 is not ideal, however I use one for TV, and DVD content.

If these are the only 3, then I think the Optoma DS317 is your best bet.. cause it sounds like it'll have the most flexibility with a much higher lumen than the other 2.

Thank you very much for your answer! Well there are but at the double of their price

Well I'm going to use it for TV, DVDs and to play. I can't get a 16:9 for this price but they are compatible with this size, aren't they?

Also could you tell me what do you think of the Viewsonic PDJ5122, the Optoma EX532 XGA 2800 and the Viewsonic PJD6211?

Thanks again!

P.S.: If you could propose me a model (450-500$ max) it'd be cool too!

If you can find a distributor that can ship a refurbished HD66 or W600, I think that would be in the 500 range! They are much better projectors than the ones you've been looking at as well!

Thanks again for your answer! Well I searched them but the cheapest price I found was 628$... Where could I find one?

Thank you

EDIT: Alright I'm almost ready to buy the projector. I'm now hesitating between the Optoma HD66 and the Epson 705 HD. Which one should I choose?

EDIT 2: Well... let's go! I'm going to take the Optoma HD66 (for 628$), I hope that it will be a nice choice!
