I'm getting the same monitor next week. I'm connecting it to an Integra DTR-8.8 receiver (pretty expensive but covers all the bases). You should check it out as well as the 7.8. Also look at the Onkyo TX-SR875 and the 805. I wanted the best scaling technology and the ability to output 1080P from all sources including HDMI, without getting seperates.
If your speakers are pretty efficient maybe you won't need the higher powered more expensive models.
Speaker choice is very subjective and like everything else constrained by budget. You should listen to as many different speakers in your price range as possible as speaker choice is probably your most important decision and bring your own CD's because you know how they sound, that way you can't be fooled.
My speaker choice for the fronts are the Focal Electra 1007 Be's which I find incredibly detailed. They're expensive but I want a high quality system for music as well. I've also ordered the new JL 10" subwoofer that will be available soon.
