I need a receiver! My house has 4 sets of built in speakers in different rooms. Also I'd like to buy extra speakers for surround sound. I want to be able to watch TV and listen to it on surround and my wife to listen to some music in the other room. I read a lot about receivers with two zone/two room and A/B speaker switch on this forum but I'm still not sure what to get. I just need something that isn't quite expensive but does the job. I looked at the Sony STR-DE998 for $350 on sale at CC but then I read a lot of bad stuff about Sony here.


Please help me out here, I'm really new at this. Thanks a lot.

That is an awefully big task for one receiver. You probably want to look into products designed specifically for audio distribution, but they will cost much more than $350. There are a number of companies that make such products, but the only one I know if is Niles Audio

Now that is something a receiver can handle. Any receiver with Multi-zone can handle this. However, the ones with multi-zone are usually more expensive. If you can't afford the one you like new, then look into getting a used one (eBay, Audiogon, Audiocircle). As far as choosing one, you will need to provide more information before anyone could make a suggestion.

This sounds like a job for a Denon 5805 receiver. Only one I know of that can handle that many zones. Plan on spending around $5000.00 though.

You can buy 4 Panasonic XR55 for less than $1k.

hajduocsi - I am assuming that you just moved into a new house, and I am wondering if there any controls currently installed with the built in speakers in the 4 rooms? If so, then you can spend a lot less money to drive the built in speakers in the 4 rooms.

What is the quality/name of the speakers? If their so-so then maybe new ones would be in order. Also are they wired already to one location or is that needed to be done?

I think the idea of XR55's & dvd/cd player in the farthest rooms is better. With one reciever you'd have to go to the main room to change input/volume/cd/dvd/etc.

As for having same cd come thru all speakers, it's still a big job. Think this thru first.

The speakers are prewired and there is no control installed currently. I don't know the brand of those speakers because I can't reach them up in the ceiling. But either way I need extra speakers since the installed speakers are in the kitchen,two bedrooms and on the patio.So I definitely need speakers for my lvingroom.The main thing for me is to have a good sound quality in there for movies, and if it's possible to use the other speakers occasionally for music,like now so I could listen to some christmas music trhoughout the house.

One possibilty is 2 receivers in living room, 1 does the movie & music there, 2nd does the rest of the house when you need it. Set 2nd receiver to 7.1 stereo w/o a sub & center.


Decide what receiver you want in the movie room. Connect the house speakers, set to 7.1 stereo (as above) & should get sound.


When you decide what speaker for the movie room, another smaller reciever for the rooms can be put in as well.


This all guesses that the wires from the rooms come to one point in the house.

Yamaha, Denon, Harmon Kardon, etc.

I'm more familiar with Yamaha's. When I went looking this summer I liked theirs - easier, less buttons, etc. Maybe 757, 657, 557. Go to their website. What's your $$ amount for this?

The Yamaha HTR line at BB & CC is about same as V series.

Do you need a phono input? Alot of receivers don't have it.

Also multi-channel input for SACD & DVD-A?
