Which Screen To Complement Optoma H31?

504 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  TheSensFan
My H31 should be here this week!

Can anyone advise me on a screen to use?

Viewers will be ~13' and ~19' from the screen. I'm debating between widths of 92" and 104" (106" and 119" diagonal, respectively). From the closest row, this equates to 1.7x the 92" and 1.5x the 104".

High contrast? High power?

I would like to get an affordable permanent wall mount with frame. Are DaLites the way to go?

Thanks for your help!

Anyone have this problem?

I want to ceiling mount my projector about 19' from the screen, but this would yield to large a picture. The largest screen size I can fit is a width of 104". The projector calculator says the PJ needs to be at the most 17'3" from the screen, but this distance does not work well with my seating arrangement. The screen also needs a gain of at least 1.6x at that distance.

Any ideas?

I would look at the Carada BW which is advertised at 1.4 gain. As for size, you have a compromise as to the placement of the projector. I would not go less than 1.5X viewing distance with this projector. Your front row viewers will see some SD at this distance. I assume you want the projector behind the viewers, thus the 19' requirement.

With a ceiling mount, the Hipower would not be my choice. I had one with the ceiling mount and the gain was reduced to 1.3 to 1.5 with a very narrow viewing cone. The viewers outside the width the screen did not enjoy the pop the screen is famous for with a table mount.

Good luck.

Thanks Henry!

As an alternative to the ceiling, I'm considering the possibility of a table mount in front of the second row of seats. My problem is I've got a row of four connecting Coasters on a 10" riser platform, so I'm not sure how the PJ could be placed in front and above the first row without being jostled or distracting.

Anyone have any pictures of a table mounted PJ that I could see?
Table Mounted PJ could be mounted in an end-table between the first row of chairs, lets say (assuming you're using chairs) providing you gave it some ventilation holes (in the table), cables are of course a problem...run them under a trip-strip or under a throw-rug or something like that.

I use a GrayWolf in a ceiling mounted configuration and never had any problem with it, but I am within 2-3 feet of the lens when I watch it so I am getting a little bit of that gain. Yes, the PJ looks brighter and punchier at lens level, but even off axis you get some gain.

But if your ceiling is taller or you have lots of off-axis seating, I wouldn't recommend it.

Why not start with making your own with BO cloth. I did, and have been using it for the past 2 years with my 4805. Cost was approx $30
