I have an ATi 9000PRO AGP video card in a Dell Dimension 4550. I would like to upgrade to a new card. How do I know what the speed of my AGP slot is(1X,2X,4X or 8X). If I buy a AGP4X,8X will it work in an AGP 1X slot(just at a slower speed)?

How old is that Dell 4550? In general, all AGP cards and motherboards are 8x. The early AGP motherboards were 2x and they only operated at a higher voltage than the 4x, 8x cards use. You'll actually see a slight difference in the cards which prevents you from plugging an old 2x AGP card into a newer lower voltage motherboard.
