Which Sub should I go with?

1304 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  pdadi
As the title states, I need your help with finding the right sub.

My current speakers are as follows:
  • Fronts - Paradigm Monitor 9's
  • Rears - Paradigm ADP190
  • Center - Paradigm CC290

I was thinking of sticking with Paradigm, but am unsure if this is a wise decision. My room is 22' in length and 13' wide.

I'd like to spend no more than $500 on a sub. I saw some folks talk about the ED A2-300.

What about Velodyne? I mainly just watch movies in my theater room. Not much music is played in the room, so this sub would be purely for the enjoyment of DTS-HD, Dolby TrueHD and all other audio formats.

Thanks for your help!

For $500 check out ed A3-300. This rocks for movies.
If you can stand the two month long wait, I also think the A3-300 is a great choice. Might want to take a look at the Cadence CSX-15, too. It's a nice big 15" sub that, for the price ($399 including shipping), will probably give you pretty high SPL's in your room. SVS PB10-NSD is another one to consider, but in a room that size it might not have quite enough output for you - depends on your listening preferences, really. Good luck!
I decided to go with eD-A3 300. I called them last night and they took me through everything. They seemed like a great company and really had their stuff together. The wait is long (should receive it around late Feb, early March), but I can wait.

Great choice - from what everyone has been saying, you'll love the A3-300, and it's well worth the wait. I hope the wait isn't too painful!
Can anyone from eD clarify what are the differences in sound between different models? a2-300 vs a3-300, a5-350 vs a7s-450 vs a7-450 ? Problem is that Craig has only tested two of those and people are in the darkness about the rest.

They actually talked to me about the A5-350, but I wasn't ready to throw down $700+. The best thing to do is call them and tell them your room size, what you do in the room (play music, watch movies, how often, etc..) and they will tell you the best route.

Well, if it wasn't for your help I wouldn't have come to a decision so quickly, so I guess a thank you is in order.

The wait will be painful, but my Fronts will do the job for now.

I'm now wondering if I should buy a separate amp to just run my fronts off of. My receiver is the Onkyo 705. Any thoughts or choices?

I already ordered a7s but I'm still not sure where it stands compared to other eD subs and the other brands..I think the relative impressions of every model should be provided here on the forum so that people can have an idea on what to buy beyond the 3 models tested by Craigsub.

Are you talking about listening impressions? Won't it be too subjective?

Again it will one or two people impressions which could be different from what do you expect. IMHO more objective testing from third parties is a better way to look at them.
