It doesn't matter as long as the sub is designed and built correctly. I'm using a sealed sub (Servo-15), and it produces significantly better bass for movies and music than many ported subs that I have auditioned. I have also heard some ported subs that performed remarkably well and better than other sealed designs I've heard.

In my opinion, a sub's engineering and quality are factors which are more important than whether it's a sealed or ported design.

James is correct. I've owned some ported subs that have really been accurate. But ported subwoofers are usually large because they don't like to reproduce frequencies below their resonant frequency. They "unload" and they do not like equalization boost down deep, either. If you need a smallish sub, and want deep bass extension, a powered sealed unit is probably a better choice. A huge, ported unit could sound great, too, though. Am I being evasive enough??
