I recently purchased the Sharp 42D72U LCD TV. I'm looking to add a new DVD player to it that will hopefully upscale to 1080i or better yet 1080p. So, I'm looking at these three players:

Sony DVPNS75H

Samsung DVD-1080P7

Pioneer DV-400V

I can't seem to make up my mind. Any opinions?

I don't want to buy into HD DVD yet... just looking for a $100 upscaler for now.

I can tell you I am pleased with the upscale picture I am getting from the DVD-1080p7 I have had for 2 weeks. Was using component video cables to my pana 42' TV with a pane progressive scan player. Now using the HDMI (720p) output to the panel. There are some minor firmware bugs that Samsung says they will fix in an upgrade, but for $89 I really think I will enjoy this player.

I'd go Sony or Oppo.

The OP stated around $100. The Oppo 970 is $149 new or $119 refurbished (plus $12 shipping outside of California)

I'd go with the Sony which is $70 refurbished. I've had both an Oppo 981 and the Sony. Not impressed with the Oppo.

FWIW, I recently replaced a Sony DVPNS75H with the Oppo 981HD. My TV (Sony 40XBR2) is a 1080p set and will accept a 1080p HDMI signal and I found the best quality I could get out of the 75H was outputting 480p and then letting the TV do the scaling since the 75H could only output a 1080i signal. I don't know if this was a player issue or TV issue, but somewhere in the journey from 480i to 1080i to 1080p something was not working as well as it could.

The Oppo will output a full 1080p over HDMI and looks great to my eyes for the price. I think you would have to move up to a much higher priced Denon , or external scaler, to beat the quality of the Oppo.
