Would you go with a Sony 34kd-xs955 high definition, or, a Panasonic 42pd25u, edtv. It has come down to one of these, please, you help me decide. thanks

If you care about PQ and don't mind rearranging your seating to be 5 to 7 feet from the Sony then go for it, it is the best PQ you'll get at near any price.

If you want to keep a viewing distance of say 7 to 10 feet then I'd say go for the bigger Panny.
Unless you need a new TV right now, do what I'm doing: enjoying my perfectly good JVC 27" analog TV until HDTV CRT prices drop, until the glitches are removed from the technology, until the CRT's become slimmer, until more inputs are added, until HD DVR's come down in price, until Cablecards become 2-way, until------. Well, you get the idea.

The HD Tube TV will outperform the Plasma on HD and SD programming.

If you watch a lot of 4:3 SD programming the Sony tube TV will have a much better image than the Panny ED Plasma. SD on a plasma isn't as good, but many people settle for the reduced image quality in exchange for a larger more immersive experience you get with the Plasma. I for one prefer the cleaner crisper image of a tube TV. My 32" HD Tube TV looks better on SD and HD than my friend's 50" Pioneer Plasma does, but it does lack that immersive feel of his Plasma.

Alternately, if you sit farther away from the screen and don't care as much about SD quality then the ED Plasma might work better for you. If i were to buy a Plasma, it would be a 42" Panny ED as it reportedly does a better job with SD than any other Plasma, ED or HD. HD is reported to look just about as good as a Panny HD Plasma at 8 feet or more viewing distance.

HD looks fantastic on my Tube TV, but i would settle for the reduced HD PQ of a Plasma to get that immersive effect if i were to watch a lot of HD programming. HD still looks great on a Plasma, but it can't compete with the sharper resolution and better black levels of a smaller Tube TV.

What he said and the ED plasmas do really well with DVDs too.
