The Pio no question about it. Of course thats the only answer you are going to get here in the plasma forum.

A 5010 for $3300? Thats a good deal.

I tried the xbr4 and the 5080 side by side. No contest...the BLUR on the xbr4 was brutal. Over on the LCD forum at least ~30-40% or more of the xbr4 owners had issues with motion blur who replied to a poll on the subject.

More, the black level, colour, response, processing, and off-axis viewing were simply amazing on the kuro compared to the sony.

No contest at all.

Pioneer 5010FD. There's no question about it.
im now even looking at the pro-110fd Elite.. the sony does 120hz and 24fps... the pio and elite do 60hz not sure about 24fps... do they elite and pio using 60hz still look better than the sony? and i do think the sony is cosmetically better looking.

Don't get caught up in the specs on those LCD displays. I think you should research the purpose of 120 Hz refresh rates. Both the Pioneer and its Elite cousin, can operate in 72 Hz mode for proper 3:3 pulldown of 24p film based material. This is an equivalent technique to using 120 Hz to do 5:5 pulldown.

The other use for 120 Hz is to reduce motion blur. Since plasmas don't suffer from blur to the degree of LCDs, they do not require motion interpolation processing (i.e. 120 Hz).
Definitely ignore the 120hz stuff like was posted above. Of the 2 things it's trying to achieve, the Pioneer does one of them and doesn't need the 2nd due to technology differences.
Depends on your tastes...The 52XBR4 is going to appear brighter or give the picture more "pop". On screen colors look good. This display handles banding slightly better. This is more suitable for brighter rooms.

The 5010FD will have a more laid-back, more natural picture. More suitable for darker rooms. Colors appear very 3D-like because of the deeper blacks.

I am a plasma person and I would take the 5010FD, but better yet save the money and go for the 5080HD instead. That would be my choice.

If light reflection is going to be a severe problem in the area where you are going to place your display, then it would make some sense to consider the XBR4. If it is somewhat of a problem, but not a severe one, the anti-reflective properties of the Pioneer screen should suffice, but that's your call. Just know that if you choose the Sony LCD in order to deal with reflection issues, you're inviting other issues like motion blur. If you watch a lot of sports, that might not be a good trade-off. So, other than a situation with a severe glare issue, I would easily choose the Pioneer.
ok i took the wife to bestbuy today to do an audition. there was a 52xbr4 and elite pro-110fd side by side... they were playing discovery hd channel.. they couldnt put on a blueray or hddvd. we sat there for about an hour looking at them. i checked both settings and they were both set to standard and all settings set to the center(no + or -). i have to say that the sony was much brighter and clearer than the elite. my wife was always telling me that the sony looks crisper and clearer. i tried to tell myself that the elite is a much better set but i was starting to agee with her. i dont really mind the $1300 price difference. and i still think that sony looks much better cosmitically.. this is making me crazy!! i cant decide.

then we watched POTC blueray on a pro-150fd(60"). it looked HOT!! then we watch spiderman 3 on blueray on a 40xbr4 and it looked much clearer real cartoon like and we both saw a lot of motionblur during fast movements.

now dont forget that i am ugrading from a panny 50 600u so i have to see a big difference from either one of these sets. and my panny is spot on, i just want togo to 1080p.

my room is 22 x 11 i sit at 20ft away from the tv. the room is not really bright as i always have the wood blinds down.

i thank you all for helping make this big decision but i still need more opinions to convince me, i know that the dicision will be mine at the end but i want to hear all the pros and cons of these two sets.

Agree with creemail...Low lite or normal ambient lighting go plasma...Brighter room or if prefer that LCD POP go with the XBR4...
You're viewing distance is 20 ft., so you really need a bigger set if you want to see a big improvement from your old 50" Panasonic. I think you should consider the Pioneer 6010FD or Elite 150FD. Also check out the 58" Samsung and Panasonic models.

Yes, they look much better than the Sony under conditions where there isn't a heavy amount of ambient light (ie lots of sunlight coming in from windows) -- in that case the Sony would be helped greatly by its bright backlight.

If you want the best contrast, colors, and depth under normal/dark viewing conditions (esp. while watching blu-ray movies in the dark), the 5010 or pro-110fd is the way to go.

The Elite benefits from some better processing and much more adjustments -- and if you're spending more than $3k on a TV, you might as well spend $400 to have it properly calibrated by an ISF technician.

To be honest, from 20 feet away you'll NEVER see any of the benefits of 1080p in a 50" or 52" display -- you need to be well within 10 feet to start seeing the extra resolution.

The 600u is no slouch, and in many ways is a better display than the XBR4 would be, especially under darker viewing conditions.

But I don't believe you'd be incredibly impressed by upgrading from a 600u to either of these displays when you sit 20 feet away... I recommend you move your seating closer, or save your money now and wait for a GIANT plasma to become affordable.

You need to be thinking 65" minimum from that distance...

aaaaaaaaaaarrrrggggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!! you guys are kiling me LOLOLOLOL!!!

i cant go gigger than 52" because i have my equipment rank mount on the wall to keep it away from the baby and i have Alantic Technology fs3200 lcr mount on the sides and bottom around the panny. the wall everything is mounted to is 8ft wide because of the hallway. so the panny is 50" wide the rack is 18" wide and each LR speaker is 5" wide. so that means i have 96" in totalwall space and 78" in equipment plus afew inches in between the equipment and due to stud placements i dont think i can get a 58" or 60" in there. i wish i could.

but i must say that you guys are steering me towards the elite so far.

If 50" is your limit, then the Kuro elites are the best possible set you could buy, IMO. From 20 feet though, you still wouldn't see any benefit from getting the 1080p elite instead of the 768p flavor.
